My "other" was getting into a car accident where I fell asleep while driving.

I love that article! I'm so SO grateful to have my CPAP machine. I can't believe how much better I feel compared to when I didn't have it. I haven't lost the weight I wanted to lose, but the difference in wakefulness, thinking, memory, etc is just amazing. And all without having a hole in my throat, ug.

It was snoring and not breathing while sleeping.
People told me I snored (like I was some kind of monster), but it wasn't until my wife (then my girlfriend) moved in with me and noticed that I would sometimes stop breathing.
She was on my butt about it for over FIVE YEARS before I finally agreed to ask the doctor about it. Granted, I hadn't been to the doctor in over four years.

My "other" was chronic pain. I thought the pain was what kept waking me up because I had to take an anti-inflammatory to get back to sleep. Turns out it was the other way around: disordered sleep was causing the majority of the pain.

Having just had half of my thyroid removed, I felt extreme fatigue. I was certain I needed some thyroid meds. Tests came back normal and doc asked how I'm sleeping. She thought it was sleep apnea. Not being a snorer, I said, "I don't think..." She interrupted and said, "You'd be surprised how many people swear they don't have sleep apnea and the study shows that they do." Mine was more than 60 during REM. Scary. Best thing she ever did for me.

I could easily say all of the above but the question really is what straw pushed you through. In my case I became a kidney donor to my wife and during that experience I became very medically aware of lots of stuff.
I learned how Apnea leads to high blood pressure and Diabetes. Two things that are very hard on the kidney in my case. There were lots of other things but I realized if I went through this life saving process to rescue my wife's quality of life I better do something for myself.

I was snoring real bad at night and doing the 60mph nod ,where I'd be driving down the road and my eyes would want to close (nod off) ,so I figured I better do something about it be fore someone gets hurt . That and the 2 million time my girlfriend said you have "sleep apnea" ....

I put Daytime sleepiness & Nacrolepsy...though they are kind of related...
My chief complaint to my doctor was the daytime sleepiness and it wasn't until I mentioned that it had turned into falling asleep unexpectedly at work (despite all effort to prevent it).....that the suggestion of a sleep study was made.
Though Narcolepsy is described as: "The condition is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work or at school."
Sad thing, is that the falling asleep during the day at 'inappropriate' times... had been happening for years. But, it was before you could buy so much candy and such with caffeine in them. Plus, I there was along stretch where I didn't really fight falling asleep at my computer at work. So had to become physically and chemically unavoidable to fall asleep at work that I finally pushed the issue. The short sleep lasting seconds to maybe a couple of minutes (screen saver never kicks in during my 'naps'...and I have 5 minute timeout)....I'd wake refreshed and be able to finish out the day.
Now, Nighttime Urination was a problem...and while I worried that it might be a symptom of something worse, my doctor never reacted to it...so I just stopped bring it up (also my mother swears its perfectly normal...as she also swears to her nightly ritual of taking too much melatonin, etc. melatonin is natural, so there's nothing wrong with taking too much and its good for you....doesn't matter that I used to have to smuggle it into the country for her...its still banned in Canada right? So, this OSA thing I have isn't hereditary because she's perfect.....better.)
Though so far the only thing that CPAP has definitely seemed to have cured is the nighttime urination....since daytime sleepiness seems to have returned, and I've nodded off now and then. Debating if I'll wait until my next follow up appointment. Could be time to schedule another annual physical...where it was during my last that led here.....

You could be losing therapy air; how's your leak rate?

Excellent...and my AHI is ~0.8 Which just makes things frustrating.

I think my userid says it all, I couldn't breathe!

How does one find this out? I find that I have trouble taking deep breaths without the cpap, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case for me as well.
