Well, first of all Billy Gates was bankrolled by a rich family to make his fortune. Its a lot easier to make money if you have money. A lot of his aquisitions were questionable too. He was definitely a Marketeer, NOT an engineer....but I digress. (Hey, I live in Microsoft Land...we are very polarized on the subject up here)

I compromise on the vinegar soak issue, having worked with plastics design for many years. Just to be on the safe side, I use a 50/50 or less mix of vinegar in a spray bottle on the mask every morning, followed by a rinse with dilute Castille soap, which is VERY mild, then water rinse of course, hang dry and thats about it.

A big thing with plastics deterioration is duration of time of exposure, at least I seem to note that in many tests over the years....with certain exceptions like bleach based and simple green that can quickly attack plastics.

The short duration keeps the vinegar smell from soaking in also.

Of course I also use Castor bean oil as a nare lube for interfaces like the Swift, which some might consider to be controversial, although I have had no problems. And I do rinse the plant based oil off every morning.

Snork,

I am somewhat of a computer buff and a history buff. Gates did get bankrolled BUT not until after he proved himself first by starting by making computer kits for mail order and doing this in his garage. Worked on a shoe string budget and had some faIlures. Got a lucky break with a small aqusition. He did have some partners that were more the engineering types and yes he was a marketer, a great one. As I am a marketer myself, I know how hard this is to do, and I have great admiration for him. He also was ruthless in getting ahead, but all great self made men tend to be. I personally think his Windows sytem is terrible, I am a Mac and Jobs fan. But he is king for now.

I don't pretend to be a plastics expert, but I do work with them, and I know my method works and I have never had to replace an interface yet. Everything we do is a compromise in life.

education

Not sure what is meant by "no education".
Bill Gates left Harvard in his junior year. I would think that was a fair level of education..
Peter Jennings finished the 8th grade, I Think.
We can get bogged down in semantics.
The amt of formal education means little on how educated a person is.
The world is full of 4.0 idiots.

tomjax,
my education never went so far as "4.0" - can you explain the term please?

Hi Ozij,

No reason you'd know it.... it's a U.S. education thing.

The '4.0' refers to a grade point average (GPA) for students.
4.0 = A (excellent)
3.0 = B (good)
2.0 = C (average)
1.0 = D (poor)

Just a funny little aside here, there was a new 'reality' show here in the U.S. (because we need so many more of them....) with the drummer from the rock band, Motley Crue. They decided to send Tommy Lee, a tatooed, drinking, womanizing, carouser to college to see how he would do and film his antics on the campus and in class.

Well, initially he was unimpressed with his roommates 4.0 GPA until he learned it was on a scale of 4 out of 4 and not 10. (Had to chuckle at that one.....)

I used vinegar in my humidifier tank when I was using tap water. The water was leaving deposits and vinegar removed them. Now I always use distilled water. Its pretty cheap and leaves no deposits that might cause those squeaks and leaks.

How much vinegar to how much water? I sometimes forget to get distilled water and have to use tap and had thought about putting either vinegar or baking soda into the water. So I am not the only one, but don't know how much to use? I try not to do this, but must on occassion as I live in country and can sometimes talk myself into waiting to go into town until I have several things to do. Especially must do this now since the price of gasoline has gone out of sight.

Oops! I meant to clean it I filled the tank with straight vinegar and let it sit all day. Then wash it with soapy water. I save the vinegar and use it again. I don't ever add anything to my water.
