CPAP are medical equipment and do not count as normal carry on. They have to let you take it as medical carry on it is federal law. Never check it in as regular luggage because if something happens to it and the airline crushes it or looses it they are not responsible for it because it is medical equipment. When you go to check you carry on baggage tell them what you have, they will examine it thoughly so make sure you protect your mask in a clear bag such as a ziploc, that is whay I tell all my patients. Laura, most of this post was referring to Canadian airlines flying out of Toronto. I only clarified that as opposed to in the subject, once people made it very clear I should not check the CPAP. I think you might be referring to American federal law. I posted a link earlier in this thread with info from Air Canada. CPAP counts as 1 of the allowable 2 carry-ons. It is counted as normal carry-on here.

I wonder if I could get away with strapping my cpap equipment onto the dog like those St. Bernards in Switzerland that carried a small keg of hooch to save errant skiers.

Great! When that pressure reaches 16cmH2O I won't need to worry about carrying my CPAP onboard!
