Hey Dreamer, wondering if you got that shirt from me. Under "What's Your Pressure?" does it say "#1 OSA pickup line"? A few years ago I made shirts with several sayings available. After some time to rethink things, I realized that a saying others don't "get" doesn't accomplish the purpose of awareness very effectively. One of my lines some found offensive, since if you didn't know it was talking about cpap, it sounded racy. (Sleep great tonight - Get blown.) Never mind that it said OSA Awareness on the next line. Oh well. My others were:
"If you snort when you snore, it might be something more."
"MaskedMan - Taking back the night"
"WindRider - Taming the night"
"Sleep Apnea Sucks"
"Hosehead... a way of life"

A couple more don't translate well to straight text.

if anyone wants to use any of these on a bumper sticker, feel free. Just would appreciate not using them on shirts, as mine are still being sold. By the way, don't quit your day job to do them. Doesn't seem to be a big demand for shirts advertising what many feel is private.

My bumper sticker ideas:

Hey Sleepy Driver
Get a sleep study!

Hey Sleepy Driver
Pull over till I'm long gone!

Don't Be A Sleepy Driver Statistic
Get A Sleep Study!

Sleepy Drivers Make Undertakers Rich!

Hey Sleepy Driver!
This is an intervention
A sleep clinic has a bed for you

I don't drive on your bed
So don't you sleep in my lane

Sleepy Driver Alert!

Good job so far, people! I'm compiling a list of all suggestions and will post it at some point so we can whittle it down to five or so that are most popular among us. Then I'll make a Poll post so we can choose a winner.

Once that's done, we can decide on the best colors to use (for both print and background) AND which website we want to reference. (My own preference would be THIS site, but I haven't accessed many others that have been mentioned.) I'll research the cost involved in having these made up and, at some point, I'll ask for a headcount of those who'd purchase one, so I can order in bulk and save more $ for all of us.

This is going well so far. I'm impressed.

I read that article.....it seems to be biased against CPAP and a sales ad for dental devices...... "CPAP is the 'Gold Standard' for OSA HOWEVER it doesn't work because of (insert page of complaints 2 pages long), BUT these wonderful dental devices, which are covered by insurance may be the non surgical answer you need for your OSA woes....." blah blah blah

Regarding "Snoring isn't sexy", those guys are doing a great job of getting the word out about OSA. Look at the four simple questions (STOP) they say everyone should ask themselves. Maybe 90% (?) of the people with OSA aren't yet diagnosed. I believe the campaign will help get many of them diagnosed - a big accomplish!

If an oral appliance effectively treats their problem - even better!

If you are worried that they will sell appliances which don't effectively treat the condition they are prescribing them for, then they will get caught very quickly. One of the dentists in their network is a local guy who has a great dental sleep medicine practice. He charges a set fee covering his whole program. This includes a follow-up PSG to make sure the appliance has taken care of the problem.

I proposed to my dentist a couple of years ago when he was headed for an ADA convention, that he get the ADA to have dentists screen all patients for sleep apnea yearly at checkup time. That may come soon.

I didn't mean to bash the article for promoting dental devices. If they work, by all means go for it. There are some nights when I wish all I used was a dental device. Anything that works as an effective alternative to surgery is A OK in my book. I was merely saying, that in my humble opinion, the artice was written with a bias.

Rooster,

Good to hear your views on Dental Devices. I was wondering if they were any good. I had my dentist make me one but have not tried it yet. I want to get some baseline APAP numbers first (I just switched from CPAP to APAP on my machine).
My dentist knows nothing about OSA or CPAP.

I plan to post more on this topic later.

Mark,

For me personally, I believe it would be a crap shoot - pay the money, get the device, and then determine if it works.

I do have a small overbite so there is some room to move my lower jaw forward. My case is so severe that I have serious doubts that it would treat my apnea very well. I would love to have one just for naps if it took my AHI down to say 10 without any long apneas.

There is a guy here who will make a Thornton Adjustable Positioner for $1700. He is not a sleep dentist and it would be up to me to determine if it is effective. The other guy charges about $5000 and does a followup PSG to determine effectiveness.

How much is yours costing and what brand is it?

Regards,
