Kop, if that book is available anywhere close to the Chicago-area ant colony that may not even exist, then I'll gladly buy the book
Its
The Kop. And sadly, the book isn't yet written.
But, the book on the medical fraud that was being perpetrated by the banana growers may get written in a hurry

Not to worry, my friend...
There just so happens to be an artist's colony right next to the ant colony----the same ant colony that may not even exist! Those two colonies are situated between an Amish colony and a recently relocated European penal colony that was settled some three-hundred years ago. Only ten miles up the road you have dozens of car dealerships supported by plenty of restaurants with convenient drive-up windows. But along my ants' part of the strip you have nothing but colony after colony. In fact, it's an entire colony of amazingly dissimilar colonies!
Anyway, I was thinking you might take some time at either the artist's colony or even the ant colony to get that book written. Then, fifteen miles in the opposite direction on that
same strip, you have publisher's row. Pack a fast-food lunch and manuscript or two before heading off in
that direction for the day. Then it's back to the motley colony of colonies for a
Swiss dinner just across the street from where you'll be staying!
Just a thought.

I know some of you are thinking that Kopoloff is a bit unhinged because of his problems with bananas. let me tell you that I AM NOT ALONE
From the pages of Nuclear is Our Future, a Chicago-based pro-nuclear activist organization
Concern about community problems is a vital part of American citizenship. Concerned citizens stopped the insanity of nuclear power in the 1970s with the help of experienced organizers. We can do it. Now, however, there is an even more pervasive menace. It affects our children, our, future, our environment, and every one of us. It is the evil banana.
Most people have never thought of the banana as the pure, unmitigated evil that it is. Many are even willing to take the risk of poisoning, falls, and choking, and are blind to the banana’s history. Many do not regard the banana as a threat to their fundamental human rights, as it is. Many people even eat bananas. In the following paragraphs, the banana’s threat to the world as we know it will be shown and its importance will be exposed.
The health risks of the banana are present and intensifying. If a banana is eaten as much as a week before its quite arbitrary “ripeness” date, the victim could die. It is only “ripe” for a few days, and then becomes fatally poisonous again. How so? There is no threshold for banana toxicity. In other words, if three people were fed 15,000 bananas, they would die. If 45,000 people were fed one banana each, three would die from it. This is a basic scientific principle. Furthermore, some people are allergic to bananas. Those people would suffer horrible deaths at the hands of the banana cartels and their governmental handmaidens. The risk is not low, and even if it were, playing roulette with our children’s future is not just irresponsible; it is random, premeditated murder that we expect only from drive-by shooters and Nazis.
Most people have no idea what the banana waste problem is. A scourge of banana parts—inedible even by the proponents’ standards—need to be carefully cleaned off bananas before they are eaten, or even the most “ripe” bananas are fatally poisonous (Your children will all die!). Once this toxic waste is cleaned off, it must be deposited somewhere, along with the contaminated water. Not only is it toxic for millions of years, but it has significant amounts of radioactive potassium. Scientific experiments conducted in 1620—called by many the first modern scientific experiments—concluded that flies are produced by these radioactive toxic wastes. The flies, obviously radioactive themselves and fed on banana residue, mutate and land on everything, spreading toxic waste everywhere. If the flies escape from the waste containers—most banana waste is stored in open boxes before being dumped into our air, water, and ground—certain annihilation will result. Banana waste becomes even more toxic over time, and inevitably enters the food chain. The really insane part is that banana waste is routinely dumped into trash bins and buried in shallow municipal dumps or made into compost, where its demonic effects can leak into the environment and kill.
Throughout history, bananas have symbolized falls, especially the inedible outer banana skin. People slip and fall constantly, resulting in injuries that are sometimes fatal to the elderly and sick. To pollute our environment with such evil is not only anti-democratic but tantamount to murder. Likewise, people who have been lied to by the evil, greedy banana industry into thinking bananas are safe to eat will occasionally choke on the banana. Why risk death—playing roulette with your life—when alternatives to the banana are clearly present? We don’t even need anything provided by the banana—the radioactive, toxic waste arranged into a pulpy, sticklike form and encased in poison. The banana has been evil from the word ‘go’ and to continue its use is pure evil at its worst.
See!

I believe the HQ of the org you quoted is actually in Oregon & not Chicago ? ...
I heard a news report recently (this month
http://www.salem-news.com/articles/apri ... 4-9-09.php ) that the building had become derelict & due to be pulled down and turned into a research center on the plant called the Musa sapienta, but that some folks are violently opposing this as they want it to become a shrine to Jack Nicholson. Also there are some people who belonged in the institution who have some as yet undiagnosed phobia regarding the Musa sapienta. Some people feel the building should be reopened as a special needs clinic to be used to resolve this seemingly bizarre complaint.
For more info about this HQ building read this link -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_State_Hospital
(its nickname had been 'Cuckoos nest' for many years (since approx 1975)).
Facts about the Musa sapienta
http://www.freshfoodcentral.com/view_item.aspx?fvid=1
Aleaxander the Great's sidekick Linnaeus was believed to have named the Musa Sapienta =
http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question40669.html - he was so impressed by the people who lived on it and the amazing qualities of it.
Back to the Chicago quote, I was sure I recognized the style in the report you quoted & was able to trace it back to originating at the above Oregon HQ

Wrong hospital. That was WESTERN STATE HOSPITAL, in LAKEWOOD, WA, just down the street from me. Where Francis Farmer also did a stint.
http://www1.dshs.wa.gov/Mentalhealth/wsh.shtml
BTW, I sometimes volunteer there. Seriously!!
Before it was mental asylum, it was the site of Fort Steilacoom, an American military base:
http://www.historicfortsteilacoom.com/
Previous to that, it was the site of the Joseph Heath farm. Mr. Heath was an HBC employee who branched out on his own. Was horribly depressed his entire tenure there, and eventually died young. Some say of suicide. Sort of fitting that it later became a mental hospital.
Anyway, I dress up funny there on the odd occasion. And much of the time, it IS an odd occasion!
Now, as for what the Sainted Late Ken Kesey WROTE in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", I can't say. My memory is that I only saw the movie. And I know the movie was filmed at Western State.
I highly recommend Kesey as a read, however. I've read most of his work. I just can't remember if I only read or watched "Cuckoo." The Kool-aid, you know.
Cheers,
Babette

Thanks for the elucidation - just wondering if it was the wiki link that had the wrong pic or just the wrong story re Cuckoo's nest ?
But, whatever the real site, the story is a good one
We actually heard about the closure of the hospital here on our local news a couple of weeks back including that some people seriously wanted to keep it intact because of the movie.
As for the name given to bananas, I could not resist pointing out that one of history's greatest men was so taken by the sight of so many 'wise men' living off bananas that his comments resulted in it being called the 'food of the wise' (more or less). I also knew Koppy would be excited to hear this news.

I've found the solution to my problem. I've ordered a delivery for next month, spraying commences June 1st. Relief is at hand
Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) is a destructive fungal disease of banana plants. It is caused by Fusarium
oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). It first became epidemic in Panama in 1890 and proceeded to devastate the
Central American and Caribbean banana industries that were based on the ‘Gros Michel’ (AAA) variety in the
1950s and 1960s. Once Foc is present in the soil, it cannot be eliminated

Whoa...! I better stop you right there if I may be so bold...
I think that solution can work out okay... if it's done just right. But it must be done smart from all angles known throughout
both the animal kingdom and now, especially, the tiny electric toy kingdom. I see that conspiracy runs on expensive AAA batteries. That can put any banana revolution in the poorhouse fast. Might be best to invest in one of these:

Well we've thought of that. Storage devices are horribly inefficient, and really do not benefit our friends the humans. We've decided on renewable energy sources, so we'll be using these.
Better put that in your pipe
