I was successful

Post by HisServ » Tue Aug 09, 2005 6:58 am

I actually was able to sleep the whole night through with the machine on last night for the first night. That was from about 10:30 - 6:15. I thought that since I only had mild sleep apnea if I slept the whole night through I would wake up feeling less tired. That was not meant to be however. Rather frustrating. I am hoping however that I have built up a sleep debt and after a few days of sleeping all the way through that I will begin to wake up feeling refreshed. I really want that. But atleast I was successful in sleeping the night through.

Congratulations on your success!!!! Don't be discouraged about not feeling like superman in the morning. Everybody reacts differently. Some feel improvement after their first night and other people don't feel anything for a few months. I've been on CPAP for 5 weeks now and am having lots of success with compliance, but I'm still very tired. I'm hoping I'll start reaping the benefits of good sleep soon. The change could also be very subtle so watch for little things. I used to wake up and stumble downstairs. Grab a cup of coffee and collapse on the couch. After 2 or 3 cups of coffee, I started to feel like I was becoming functional. Now, I walk downstairs, get the coffee, and am able to carry on a conversation almost immediately. I don't feel like dancing or anything, but at least I'm functional a little sooner in the day.
Be patient! Amy

Great! Every little bit of progress helps, doesn't it? I too am still waiting for that great feeling when I awaken. However, this morning, I just realized something. It's been quite a few days since I woke up and took a fairly long while to try to figure out what day it is and do I go to work today or how much longer can I get away with staying in bed because the way I feel, I can't possible force myself to get up.

I also have noticed, that I no longer walk sideways when I first get up. I was really having problems not hitting my right wall going down the hallway or just going on,on over to the right until I thought I'd fall down. Just couldn't keep my balance before.

So, I hope we will just gradually realize that more and more things are getting better.

It's heartwarming to read positive stories of even subtle results from therapy. It took me a while to realize that I was improving, but my first notice was no more fatigue. Yes, I was tired but the fatigue had disappeared. And, boy, did that feel great. Then about a week and a half into therapy, I woke up one morning, even though I hadn't slept through the night yet (rarely still do, although I feel great now), and I felt like I hadn't felt in as long as I could remember. It was so exciting. I haven't had any obvious realization like that ever again, but I consistently feel great now every single day.
I never missed one day with the mask on for the entire night since I started at the beginning of June, so maybe that was one of the reasons for feeling as great as I do now. Just never give up and when you look back, boy, do you see the difference therapy has made.

Very good, HS. You're making good progress. Don't be surprised by steps backward again from time to time. But that's very, very good news!
