I just saw my PCP last week and she told me she wanted me to get at least 800mg of vitamin D. Recent studies were showing it was very important so I guess my doctor is on top of it. I checked my vitamins and I am getting 600mg in them. Plus I have cereal every morning at work and walk at luch so I think I am probably getting an adequate amount.

Hmm, I also just got diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency (@ 5 ng/mL) with the following doctor's instructions:

"Your Vitamin D levels are very low. Please take VIT D 50,000unit
1Capsule ONCE WEEKLY 'FOR 8 WEEKS FOR SEVERE VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY', then
start VIT D 1000 Units of Vit D daily, Vitamin D3 is best absorbed."

And also, my B12 was lower than he liked at 218 pg/mL on a normal range of 180-914 pg/mL. He wants it up over 450 pg/mL.

I sort of thought this was a mistake, and wasn't even sure why he checked them. But I guess I better go pick up my Vitamin D pills!

Vit D deficiency is many times a problem for people with thyroid issues--i have it and I live in ARIZONA!! We have sunshine here 365 days a year---but you know what? We are trained to pile on the 30 SPF sunscreen before we go outside so then not only do we not get skin cancer--but we get NO VIT. D either!! I have an underproducing thyroid so my endo already found that I was too low on VIT. D. I took the capsules for 10 days and now I just supplement with OTC ones from Trader Joes. I started the sub lingual B 12 too---that are GREAT!! I just cannot swallow big pills anymore --i gag on my calcium tablets. so yes by all means start taking your Vit. D. The phamacists told me that he sees TONS of people that are low on VIT D and all they need to do is sit ouside for 15 min. a day without any sunscreen--- instead they run to the phamacy and pay for the pills.

I live in NM, spend plenty of time outside and am too lazy to wear sunscreen.
After a certain (ahem) age, the body becomes very inefficient about converting sunlight to Vitamin D.

Hi Momadams---oh wow--no one mentioned the "AGE" factor!! LOL! Figures --HA!! HA!! Why does everything seems to wear out once you hit 50? I wonder if I can do an experiment and sit outside to see if I can covert the sun into VIT D before my next blood test? I could lay off the supplements to see if the sun works for me. I am too busy to go in the sun even for 5 min. but at work I could say that it is a MEDICAL condition!! LOL!

50,000 iu once a week here as well, it has made a tremendous improvement in my energy levels.

Occasionally I'll also take an extra 50k pill once a month, google the vit D council, there is some tremendous research and the implications on the human body from not taking enough.

BTW, the natural version of this is the true Vitamin, it turns out that a natural product can not get a patent, so in this case taking the over the counter version (D3) is better than the D2? prescription version.

With the new information on the importance of adequate Vitamin D3 levels, physicians (especially "complementary physicians" who practice a blend of traditional medicine and alternative medicine) are commonly recommending anywhere from 5,000 -10,000 IU daily. My Internist who practices Complementary Medicine and who is certified as an Anti-Aging physician, currently has me on 5,000 IU (DAILY) based on my blood test results.

When I read other posts talk about 50,000 IU my eyes widened . . . until I realized they were talking about a weekly dose, not a daily dose.

If you buy Vitamin D, look for D3 (cholcalciferol), not ergocalciferol. The better quality brands are found in a health food store if that is available in your area (rather than a discount store, supermarket, or even drugstore that stock mostly inferior quality products). It's a good idea to have your doc do the blood test to determine dosage (hopefully, he/she is current on the new dosage information ).

MONITORING 25(OH)D LEVELS make sure that the vit D test is the 25(OH)d test, not the other one, see [url]http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/treatment.shtml/url] for more information

Wow, I learn so much from this board. The very day this original post appeared I had some blood drawn for the usual cholesterol, thyroid levels, etc., etc. This prompted me to call my doctor and ask if he would check my Vitamin D levels. A few days later his nurse called back and confirmed that the doctor would check that as well. Long story short I received a call today from his nurse saying that all my levels were great, EXCEPT for Vitamin D which is low and that I need to call and make an appointment so the doctor can get me started on supplements.

Thank you everyone for sharing.
