I didnt even know about a delete button, nor do I care. I don't need a PC crutch to tell me what posts are to go and which are to stay

I lost or had my spam button taken away within a month of becomming a member back in 2006. I don't recall deleting anything that I truely thought was not spam but I have been known to make mistakes in the past

The fact is I have not had a "delete spam" button to use for almost 3 years ... have not missed it. I have however noticed some of my posts deleted by unknown spam button pushers.

I like the idea of only allowing a certain few to have such a delete button ... you could set it up so that a few very active members who average 5 or more posts per day and have at least 1 or 2 months of membership or something like that be allowed to have such a button.

I've been fine with out my spam button but I would like to know how I go about reporting when someone deletes my posts which are clearly not SPAM.

Oh, it never really bothered me enough to waste one iota of anyone's time on that issue. There were still plenty of remaining people with spam button privileges to very effectively cope with our spam problem back then. My comment in the above post was really nothing more than me not having the will power to pass up a little situational humor---even if at my own expense.

Whether we as a group have spam buttons really is an important issue IMO. And if anyone wants to get their spam button back because they think they have unfairly lost that privilege, then formally and privately explaining that to Johnny or a moderator is a perfect solution in my opinion as well. Great suggestion, Songbird!

But to reiterate, my own vote goes with leaving the moderator privileges exactly as they are, while also implementing that 30-day (or perhaps even longer) spam-button privilege. Whether we happen to be talking about spam buttons or special "spam moderator" privileges, I think people are guaranteed to feel differently about the issue(s)---regarding not only the technical aspects of any proposal, but the human side of any equation as well. What makes this board very special IMO is that we periodically have these group strategy discussions to pull an even better game plan together, thanks to Johnny.

That's the most cherished privilege handed out on any message board IMHO.

Same here, I don't know which "GOD" I offended, but they took my button. The only result I can see is I resent it, as not knowing why for sure, and my dog has lost ten pounds, he was quite fond of SPAM.

The good thing about not having a "MOD", one less person with a "GOD complex", not that all do, but if you don't have one, you won't have a bad one. Jim

Well said SWS. I too am in that "similar" boat and I wish to stay in my own little happy boat so that I can shouts out my own opinions without being thrown out of a bigger boat

I have deleted a number of clearly spam posts .. and have not lost the button .. yet! I agree to limiting newbies.

I don't think I can take the stress of the responsibility of having my very own delete-spam button right now!

Can I please loan it to -SWS for a few years?

If not, could I give it to Babs so later she can start a spam-button trial for one-month newbies (including Canadians!)?

I lost my delete spam button early on when there was one of those rare flame wars going on and read something that nearly shocked the pants off me (being a really green newbie). I finally explained to the forum admin and got it back. The only thing I've deleted since was a viagra ad and didn't lose it after that one so I guess I'm safe.

In the interests of free speech, I don't ever plan to delete messages other than obvious bot ads again. If I find something offensive (harder to do these days), I don't have to read it

I am new as well.

I agree it would be nice to have a 'report spam' that was followed up on. However, I fear the board would quickly become cluttered and unusable.

Overall, if it has been working in general.............then keep the 'delete spam' button and restrict the button to users with 'x' number of posts.

Personally the first couple of months as a newbie, I've was too involved in research reading and throwing out questions, always assuming those of a higher power would take care of the spam.

And, so it probably should be - give newbies a couple of months on board, thereby proving their legitimate interest in the site, before they get their Delete Spam button.

We see flame wars at times and the flamers delete each others posts or post of others on one side or the other.

We see attacks on long standing forum members that are rather nasty.

We see obvious spam.

And I guess RG sees porn - don't doubt it.


The second part of these are serious problems (real spam and porn), however the first two of these are more minor. I am sure there are other problems too.

My perception:

Posts are made

someone doesn't like the post and hits report spam (BTW that button is not visible if you have some accessibility options set up on your puter)

post hits the trash file and gets deleted in time by some at cpap.com

There is no review of the posts that hit trash just they all get deleted.

Every so often something that gets deleted needs to be reinstated and that takes work to find and put back on the board.

I know Johnny has been trying to find a solution for years on this that would work well as I have seen him post about this before.

At one time guests couldn't post links which helped some but that wasn't reinstated in the new forum last summer.

I think there should be the ability to move something into a review area and have it really reviewed not just auto deleted.

The problem isn't going to be solved entirely by most of the suggestions being made.

I like the idea of urgent delete versus review - second button but is that going to solve things? Can the forum software even handle that?

I like the idea of some requirements for ability to have the button available such as length of membership and posts, but that shouldn't be all of it.

I have another user name which I don't use anymore (last post summer 2007), but it doesn't have many posts but is longer time in membership so it might not meet all the requirements but does that mean I should be able to delete with one account and not with another? This whole aspect of having more than one account is a whole new can of worms as someone had suggested above.

I think there needs to be a review of who actually has lost their buttons and consider reinstating them to some of these.

I am all for some kind of moderation of the forum (it lacks it for the most part), but I also don't want to see this become another highly moderated apnea support board.

I agree with Georgio. I have deleted some spam posts (just did one with "adult porn" links a few minutes ago), but have also had one or more of my posts deleted. Having been a moderator of forums in the past, leaving it all on you (suppose you DO have a life, eh?) is too much. But take some of the longtime trusted folks, make them "forum admins" with spam delete ability.

The rest of us don't really need it IMO, and keeps folks from just deleting posts based on their personal likes and dislikes.

I like the idea of the Report Spam button deleting a spam post. I for one use the dog out of that only deleting true spam, and I bet I've used it 25+ times. Frankly I'm kind of shocked that anyone takes the time to spam here because it's obviously repeat offenders that are doing it...

I wonder if it's possible that it only delete the post if it's a non-registered user. 100% of the spam I've deleted has been non-registered posts.

I like SharkBait's suggestion ~ I can't imagine true spam coming from this community!

i like this idea, also maybe delete posts of new users less than 1 month old, i have seen a few register and post.

or, let anyone delete a non registered post, but have a few mods that can delete registered users posts
