It is a largeish filter that is used in a forced hot air heating system

I have never heard of this heating system. Just trying to work out if we have something similar where we are and locate a filter I could use.
Is that like air conditioning but with hot air?
What heats the air?

WOW! It must be a regional thing!
Forced Air Gas Heat is pretty common on the West Coast. All the hardware stores have large sections devoted to "furnace filters".
But on the other hand, since i am in the temperate Northwest...
Whats air conditioning?
I would assume air conditioners must use filters that would be similar to furnace filters.
And actually we do have air conditioning in places where I work, since you can't open the windows. Although they only seem to get around to cranking up the cooling after it cools down for winter....brrrrrr.....
