I used to not be so ...ahem... meticulous (read: "fussy") about cleaning, but after two serious bouts of pneumonia, I stay as far from potential infections as I can. Kids come home with the sniffles? "I luv ya, babe, but I'll be up in my room. Feel free to open a can of Spaghettio's if you get hungry. No need to kiss me goodnight." Seriously. An upper respiratory infection can knock me out for weeks if it moves to my bronchial tubes. Long, cramped car ride planned? I'm not ashamed to wear a mask.
Love it! "Fussy about cleaning..." If truth be told I was downright slovenly. However it is a new mask and I'd like to keep it nice as long as possible. Now I take it with me into the shower every day and wash it with the liquid castile/peppermint soap that I use on myself.
The hose non-washers, however, have me conviced.
I started using a CPAP in my early 30's. I'm 57 now and I'm not dead yet from my former unclean habits, but I contracted pneumonia in my mid 20's and it's not something I would wish on my mother's worst enemy. Having said that I'd like to add that not washing the hose *EVER* hasn't killed me yet.
