SG, don't worry, you won't be sued for your opinion and analysis.
Dr. Walden seems like a lot of surgeons who tend to think slicing is a better option more often than it really is. (If I were a surgeon, oerhaps I might view things from the same perspective.)
I happen to love Fox News (but I'm not judgmental. What ever anyone watches is perfectly fine w me.) However, they would occasionally have a Dr. Manny on in the mornings. He was a benign kind of guy, but not exactly brilliant.
As the medical literature on OSA and its treatment grows, and as sleep apnea is taught in med schools (not only as an isolated issue, but also as a potential culprit in many life threatening conditions) the medical punditry will improve as well.<P>
Hopefully.

In a Finnish medical publication
(just for reference: http://www.mehilainen.fi/verkkolehti.ph ... azine_id=8)
it says about surgical operations:
in 80% of cases it reduces snoring
in 50% of cases it reduces apnea
After an operation more than 50% of patients get mouth/throat problems due to the operation.

I wouldn't consider that a cure, but rather an uncertain exchange of problems.

sleepguide wrote:....Ok, that's a little insensitive and surely overstated, but here's the kicker: according to Dr. Walden, CPAP doesn't "really" treat Sleep Apnea at all. Why? Because, Dr. Walden says, using CPAP, Sleep Apnea isn't "going to go away." Dr. Walden's solution? Losing weight and surgery...
CPAP treats the symptom, losing weight treats the cause (for some, though not all). I really don't see a problem with the limited statement above (though the embellishments are misleading)

Before cpap, one treatment for sleep apnea was a tracheotomy. Me, I'd chose to treat the symptom with cpap

Oh, I'd say it depends on how kinky your partner is. Some of us get into paraphernalia

All that aside, yes, certainly not a very good piece. ...
I'm reminded of the Simpson's episode when Marge asked Homer "When did fox become non stop porn?"

In the piece I posted yesterday, I was mainly focused on the surgery vs. cpap issue and the surgeon's off the wall statements. today, i take a look at the tone of the co-hosts and the ridicule that they expose CPAP users to:
"If you didn't like first three minutes of the Sleep Apnea Surgery segment on FOX featured in yesterday's article, you're going to hate the last minute. At about the three minute mark in the video, embedded below, the host, co-host and even the surgeon being interviewed each take turns at belittling and mocking CPAP users:

"Kind of makes you look like the Montauk Monster," the host says around the 3-minute mark, to which the doctor agrees, laughs and joins in . . . "more like an elephant snout." The co-host then chimes in, in the same mocking tone, "something you can only wear if you're married... you wouldn't want to bust that out before then." I don't know about you all, but this part of the FOX news report literally made me cringe. The message being aired nationwide here is that if you suspect you have Sleep Apnea, but you don't want to go in for an invasive surgical procedure, you're out of luck. That is, unless you (i) are married or (ii) want to give up all hope of a sex life because this thing called CPAP is a ridiculous monstrosity that will repel potential mates like the attractive co-hosts of FOX News.

Publicity and raising awareness about Sleep Apnea is generally a good thing, but when presented in this fashion, I wonder whether it actually does more harm than good."

looks like Dr. Waldon speaks is a little bit of a jack of all trades:
