My first nine years were in Louisville, KY. Then my family moved to coal country, Pike County, KY, where I lived with my mountain kin until I was 17. After moving to horse-farm country, near Lexington, KY, for a while, I moved to Brooklyn, NY, where I've been for the last 25 years.

WOW, Jeff ... Brooklyn! What a culture shock that must have been! Evidently you like it or you wouldn't be there . . . but I am scratching my head as to why anyone would leave the beautiful rolling hills of bluegrass country and clean air for . . . the Big Apple. I'd love to hear the story (as only you could tell it) . . .

I went in the other direction . . . from NJ to KY

I often miss the beautiful state you live in, JoyD., and I make sure I make it down your way several times a year to visit family and friends. I embrace my Kentucky roots and feel that I experienced three completely different cultures growing up there: Louisville felt like a city of the midwest, Pikeville was true mountain culture, and Lexington had a feel much like the American South. So one of my favorite things about Brooklyn is the unique diversity of its languages and cultures. I can take a quick walk and feel as if I'm in another country of the world every few blocks. Living here serves as a daily reminder to me that I am a citizen of, as McKooi put it so well earlier in this thread, "planet earth." It's a reminder I enjoy getting.

Let me see ...

Born and reared in Mississipi (through college and first Masters degree)
then North Carolina
then Mississippi again
St. Louis, MO (grad school)
Illinois
North Carolina again
Louisiana
Connecticut
New York City
NJ
South Florida

And no, I'm not in the military, nor was my family. I'm just a gypsy, I guess. I was thinking just last night that where I am now is the fourth place my 9-year-old cats have lived.
