Uh Chris, you missed the last sentence.
Just got a survey and a consultation appointment with the sleep lab for Jan 8th. It had the following note in it:

["Information note: if you are concernd that you may lose your license if you have sleep apnea please do not be worried. Sleep apnea is one of many medical conditions that doctors are obliged to report but once you have been through a sleep clinic it will be properly diagnosed. If you have it then it will be treated and you will no longer be considered a risk. Your best protection is to be properly investigated and, if necessary, treated. you will then be protected from any risk of losing your license through some other doctor reporting you because of your symptoms. I will be happy to discuss this with you in the interview if it remains an issue of concern. You will continue to keep your driver's license as long as you fund my home, my yacht, my Lexus, my wife's Lexus, my vacations, my club memberships, tickets to athletic and cultural events and my kids' education through followup appointments."]

Update:

I've been to my consultation 3 weeks ago, and I have my sleep study *TONIGHT*. I asked to be put on their cancellation list, and they were able to sneak me in. Since I've started the process, I've renewed my license with absolutely no hassle whatsoever. The doctor echoed many of your sentiments saying, treated, sleep apnea does not make you a hazard to anyone on the road. Should you be diagnosed with sleep apnea and not pursue treatment, or if you're falling asleep while driving now, then you'd have a problem with your license.

Well, I'm nervous about tonight. I know there's nothing to be worried about, it's just a little intimidating!

Glad to hear your getting help! I live in rural area as well and I understand your concerns about your license. I'm glad to hear you won't have a problem with your license.

I was nervous too before my sleep study. I found that I was so exhausted, I could sleep under under most any conditions and all the wires didn't bother me that much. YMMV. I hope all goes well for you. Be sure and post tomorrow to let us know how it went!

I'm glad you decided to get checked out for it. Losing my driving license was one of the things that kept me from being entirely straight with my doctor about my symptoms. I was really worried about it a lot, probably because I already knew that most of the time I didn't feel safe driving. Over the past several years I've cut my driving down on my own, most days my car just sits in the garage. I bike, walk, take the bus, get a friend to drive me, etc. After the diagnosis of narcolepsy on top of sleep apnea I ended up asking my doctor point blank if I needed to stop driving. He basically said no as long as we get all this stuff treated adequately.

Anyway, don't worry about the sleep study. I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep with all that junk all over my head, face, chest, legs, etc. but I did. You'll do fine I'm sure of it.

Chris,
Excellent news! Let us know how the sleep study went for you. Mine went very well, but some have a few problems, it seems to depend mostly on the Techs and the lab policies. Ask lots of questions of them, and do your best to get a good machine. BTW, I was literally falling asleep at the wheel pre-cpap and now have no trouble staying awake while driving. Getting good treatment will make a difference for you.
