The only time I have awakened in a panic with the mask on was when I realized my nose was stuffed up and I was struggling to get air. Since I don't open my mouth anymore with the nasal mask on, I was somwhat choking to breathe. That caused panic. But it wasn't until I realized that was what was happening was I able to get a grip, calm down and use the occasional Flonase or Nasonex. If it's an extremely humid and hot night, or the allergy count is very high, I will use it as a precaution before the mask goes on.
Have you noticed any stuffiness when you've awakened in panic? Maybe it's not claustrophobia after all.
