I picture a car battery with jumper cables going to my APAP and a battery charger that turns on with a loud clack and hum. It looks like a cartoon in my imagination, of course we can embelish the thought with a pair of heart paddles hanging there as a "backup device" for the extra chuckle. But I would like to know more about how it looks, sounds and is there the acid smell when it's charging (explosive!).

Might be an opportunity for someone to package units.
My battery charger dosen't hum or clack (no sounds at all) ... it is stored away under the bed (so nothing to look at either) and it is a 95 amp-hour absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery with no acid smell or explosive dangers (even knock it over and it won't spill) ... and I can use it for 8 to 10 nights without having to recharge if need be. Haven't tried hooking up the heart paddles though ... can we buy those on ebay or craigslist?

Great. I am glad that you are taken care of. All CPAP users should have some sort of battery back-up power, regardless of which method used.

DS, are you using an Optima brand battery? if not, which one, please.

Yep ... an Optima blue top.
