Well, it's been a few years since this was discussed. Has anyone discovered a definitive answer to the "morning smell"? I just started using a machine about three weeks ago and each morning I smell an aroma very similar to those described here: an overpowering and unpleasant "perfumy" smell. It doesn't last as long now but still lingers for some minutes after doffing the mask. Now, in 2014, are we destined to continue theorizing, or has a cause/solution been found?

I really enjoy that first breath when it is nice enough outside to be sleeping with the windows open. I love the smell of the morning as the sun comes up.

With the windows closed, I really don't notice any difference.

I don't smell anything different when I unmask in the morning... maybe I'm weird. I never thought about it before, but this thread makes me wonder if it isn't something in the cushions that assaults our noses, and then when we take the mask off that something reacts with the room air to create the sensation of something different than the room air. Since I use mask liners, perhaps my nose is insulated from that. But if you use liners and still smell the baby powder or whatever, that shoots my theory.

I remember the scent of the linens on the bed, the fabric softener and the little hotel soaps under the sheet.
Now, I only smell these things between unmasking and sitting up.
As I get up and walk around, I am seized by a fit of sneezing, and I need to blow my nose.

I'm only about 2-3 weeks into sleep therapy, but for the first almost 2 weeks I was going to sleep a little earlier than usual (eager to use the unit, I guess). The last two nights I've gone to sleep later, and I find that if it's later and I'm really tired, I can sleep with the mask much better. Last night I was actually eager to get the mask on and get some sleep. So I think I'm starting to get over the learning curve. Still can't keep it on all night, but it's getting better and I had my longest night of therapy so far the night before last, keeping it on for 6.5 hours.

I do wake up with a very dry tongue at least once each night.

To me the air isn't all that much different. I always believed that the air from the cpap is the same air that you always breathe even when your not on the cpap.

When I first unmask, the room smells "stuffy". The air in my mask smells refreshing. I guess I'm bass-ackwards!

We have 5 indoor only cats, and their litter station is such that they have to travel through our bedroom to get to the room where the litter boxes are. You can pretty much guess what the first thing I smell after unmasking is, but suffice it to say that I have to fight the urge to put the mask right back on and get some good ol' filtered air.

I just returned from three weeks in Europe, packing my machine along. While there, the morning aroma changed...and now that I'm home it has all but disappeared. Another of life's mysteries.
