I think McCain is checking out Palin to see how good she would look in an explosive vest.

I voted for Ronald Reagan and am still a big fan of his. I am a Bible-believing southern (lower case 's') Baptist. Politically, I am a strict constitutionialist and a liberal (classical sense, not today's meaning). I cherish our Republic (it is not a democracy).
Since the electorate will hardly elect anyone unless they are members of the two major parties, I prefer to see one party with a congressional majority and the other holding the Presidency. This makes it more difficult for the sorry rascals to pass new laws which are almost always counterproductive and pull us farther from our constitutional grounding.
Hot damn! Finally a person that doesn't call us a democracy! phitoooey, yuk, gag...sorry, just hate when I have to say that word in the same sentence with our Nation. "God save us from Democracy! It is mob rule, that is why we have a Republic!" (badly paraphrased remark of Benjamin Franklin)
As to the two party system, I'm ok with it because I believe we use all channels available to us, until they no longer work. Then constitutionally, we correct the miss-direction.
Sure appreciate your remarks Rooster, they were a refreshing visual as I enjoy my morning coffee

I prefer it, too, although when the same principle applies at the state level, it can wreak havoc with my day-to-day life.
Like most states (actually, we're no more a state than the US is a democracy; we're one of four commonwealths), Pennsylvania's General Assembly is bicameral -- has a Senate and House of Representatives. By law, the State Budget must be passed each year no later than June 30. (Let's not dwell on THAT statement; suffice it to say that particular law is often bent or broken.) If the budget doesn't pass by then, State payments are to stop, including paychecks for State workers. Being primarily self-absorbed (as are all humans, in my view), we State workers breathe a collective sigh of relief whenever, at the conclusion of the general election in November, we learn that the Governor, the majority of Senators and the majority of House members all belong to the same party. In those years, the budget passes on time and often months early, like a hot knife through butter. Like most things in life, the messier way, although more complicated and um..... messy, is the better way, IMO.

Stuff like this - even when it's negative - puts the new face on the map. It's not out of the realm of possibility that this video came from McCain's own campaign peeps as a viral advertising scheme.
More far-fetched tactics have been known to occur during presidential campaigns. G. Gordon Liddy and scotch tape comes to mind...

I'd been taught in school that we are a democracy within a republic.
However, more and more, I'm seeing us as a
Corporatocracy.
After all, the first thing out of Bush's lips after 911 was to ask us to spend money.
Nowadays there is less
E. Pluribus Unum, and more
Caveat Emptor.

Ahh gotta luv those public schools for history accuracy huh, but you are correct. Problem is that that has all been subjugated to an all out assault from the marxists of the world. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that said, when asked the results of the meeting in Philadelphia, "we've given you a Republic, if you can keep it." (apologies to Ben for not getting it right if I've misspoke)
First; we are a Republic
Second; we use democratic processes within that Republic.
Third; You'll get no argument from me that our Republic has been seriously breached. IMHO it started in 1913 with the making of the federal reserve. Breached again in 1965 with the Immigration bill. I don't even want to talk about the inclusion of the UN in our Nation, hak, tooey!
With that I'll leave you with the battle slogan for America today..."The difference between a hockey Mom and a pit bull? Lipstick!"
Sic 'em Sarah :O)

I tend to think it started with the erosion of antitrust laws - which started about when they were first enacted. If corporations can't vote, why do I feel like they have more rights and protections than humans? There's a very fine line between organized criminal protectionism and what's been happening in the current administration. And that line has gotten mighty gray.
I'm reminded of Mrs. Weasley's saying, "Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain", from the "Harry Potter" series of books. Aren't big corporations kind of like that?
@DreamStalker - True about the oil industry. Ethics is clearly not a part of the current administration's policy. I'd like to rest assured that our next administration will cure that flaw. However, I'm not entirely convinced the electronic voting system isn't rigged.

I'd like to throw in the infamous "hanging chad" factor as well. I'm sure that was avidly discussed in many man caves across this great Neanderthal Republic.

With regard to the bikini-clad gun-toting girl in the picture that was posted earlier in this thread......
I tried scanning through the posts to see if it had been clarified that the picture was a fake, but didn't see any.
Apparently, CNN didn't either.

Here's a clip of Sarah speaking at the church in which she was raised. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure this is an actual, unaltered film:

I knew it was a fake when I saw the air rifle. You can't kill a Caribou with a pellet rifle.

Rooster stated that it was a fake when he first posted it
viewtopic.php?p=295582#p295582.
But the "real" bikini-photo from flickr looks even more fake since the woman's head looks disproportionately smaller than the body ... whoever faked the Palin photo did a pretty darn good job IMO.
As for truths and untruths ... yea right, fox is well known for their false and balanced reporting
Too bad Ron Paul won't be on the ballot. He was the true "straight talking" "hope for change" candidate. Although I don't agree with all of Paul's views, he comes closer to my views than any other ever has. As DreamDiver noted, we really do have a single-party corporatocracy disguised as a two-party system. The two-party system is used to compel the ignorant masses into tribal skirmishes over trivial wedge issues diverting attention from the corporations that have stolen and now run the nation.

Seems anytime there is 'another' view from a media source, those that are comfortable with the mainstream liberal dominated news cast stations are 'comfortable' in casting disparaging remarks against them. I'd love to see the ratio of mis speaks on Fox to, oh I don't know...let's say NBC? CBS? PBS? MSNBC?
I also like Mr. Paul, perhaps someday.
Indifference and apathy has brought us the corporatocracy you speak of. "Democracy can only be maintained by a morale society." I forget who said that, still true. It also requires the citizens to be actively involved, not just saying, "Oh, they know best, I'll let them do it." That is what has caused the rip in the hull of our Republic. Republics take citizen action, never ceasing, always vigilant. Then again, if you study the cycle of 'freedom', it really is following that same pattern. Someday, perhaps, we will regain that wonderful condition known as freedom within a Republic. Not holding my breath(board pun intended ) though.
Involvement
does make a difference though. Start from where you're at, we don't have to solve 'world' issues one on one, we can make a big difference locally that will, eventually, begin to make a difference Nationally. I think of Sarah Palin in that example. Like her conservative position or not...you really should appreciate all that she has done.
