I'm sorry it offends you. Seriously. I am. But as others have said, no one is forcing you to look at it. The title makes it obvious that the thread is 100% OT (off topic), and since you feel that strongly about what the purpose of this forum should be, I cannot understand why you even opened it.
The administrators allow a certain amount of OT and hijacked threads, and I appreciate it very much. Why?
As far as I've seen, those threads were never posted with bad intentions. The hijacks are just like having a conversation. Sometimes it just takes a left turn. When that happens, someone might gently get us back on topic (gentle and reasonable are the most productive actions; expressed anger and criticism usually only generate the same and are counterproductive) or split the OT/hijacked portion into a new thread. When reasonable people act reasonably, no problem is insurmountable.
The main reason I appreciate the OT and hijacked threads, the jokes, etc., is an extremely serious one. I strongly believe that laughter heals. It's known to lower blood pressure, lift spirits and help people adopt positive outlooks. Those with a positive outlook get better quicker. I have no medical training, and this is only my assumption... When we laugh, we suck in more oxygen than we do when just at rest, working at the computer, etc. Oxygen promotes healing. And without knowing their stories, I can guarantee that a huge number of us just need a good laugh every once in a while. Now, we're not talking a polite little titter, you understand. I mean a gut-busting, body encompassing "I love life" kind of laugh, like when Richard Gere snapped the jewelry box on Julia Roberts' hand in "Pretty Woman." (BTW, I read that was completely unplanned and a total surprise to Julia, which means we get to see her real, true self at that moment.) Many of us spend a considerable amount of time here, and we get to the point of just plain ole enjoying each other's company. Anybody I spend time with needs to enjoy life and allow me to enjoy it, too.
No one expects all of us to agree all of the time; and we certainly don't; and sometimes we don't in technicolor. It's my opinion, though, that the way we choose to express our disagreement is a sure sign of our character.
I hope you'll reconsider your estimation of this forum. There's so much offered here, including an incredible body of knowledge, freely offered suggestions and much-needed support. And as long as they aren't attacks, opposing ideas are welcomed, as well. I think you could benefit from stopping in here from time to time, and I think we could, too.
