If you are using tap water, local water quality may vary from place to place.
Use distilled water only.

That's because the Respironics Factory in China has a vinyl shower curtain next door, the ResMed Factory also in China, just has a fish matket. Jim

This legitimately does happen. It's a HUGE problem with my remstar When the tank gets below half when this smell gets so strong it disturbs my sleep. It is absolutely from the humidifier tank since I can literally smell the water when the machine is completely off and that smell is coming off it.

This has happened with 2 machines. The original and the replacement.

I think I just need to get a different machine.

I have noticed that if my water tank goes dry, the heater will keep heating a empty tank.
When the humidity setting is set high and the tank goes dry a burning plastic smell can be detected.

That is because the tank has no water in it, causing the bottom of the tank to overheat, the plate has a plastic covering. I'll bet if you put a tea kettle on your hot stove you will smell it too, burning things smell. Jim

I have the same issue. An episodic burning plastic noxious smell that wakes me up and takes hours to clear from my lungs. It happened again tonight and so finding no help in the forum I completely disassembled the System One including the fan. It appears the fan is contacting the housing for plastic to rub on plastic. The black material I cleaned off is the source of the smell. I will be replacing the unit in the morning.

Note to anyone tempted to disassemble their machine:
If the warranty is still in effect---DON'T.

Just FYI, I am trying to figure this out from a Norelco System One. Electronic odors are not good to inhale.
The Humidifier is not turned on... as some people mention that as a potential problem.

I have a new Respironics Dreamstation. It had kind of a burning smell when I got it, I figured it was something from the manufacturing process, so I let it run for awhile without wearing it. I called the place where I got it, she said it was normal to smell at first. However, a couple of weeks later, when I took the tank out, I saw that the heat plate under it was black, with a burned tar look, worse toward the middle of it. I read that there were problems with an older model of the same brand from 15 years ago. Could they seriously not have fixed that yet? It's not comforting to sleep next to something that looks like it has or could catch fire. The place I got it from said my insurance wouldn't pay for the machine if I didn't use it for at least four hours a night (it's connected to my Dr by WiFi). I can't get an appointment until next week to exchange it. Good thing I still have my old machine! Not happy with Philips Respironics or Sleep Techologies right now!
