"computer techs tell me that if I buy a new maching there is a very good chance that the drivers for the hardware won't be available to go back to XP."
Well, you are being lied to. They are just trying to get you to buy hardware you don't need. Unless you are a bigtime PC gamer like I am, you don't need to support the newest graphics cards which need Vista to run at their full potential.
Here you go, a nice XP laptop, really small.

But to get back on topic, I have 64bit Vista and cannot run Encore Viewer. I have to use my work laptop which is XP.

Anyone have Encore working XP SP3 yet? I tried on my laptop. Nope the SQL server just crashes. I did the advanced setup and still not working. What I'll have to do is wipe out the laptop and put sp2 only. Man what a mess!
Have Encore Pro V1.6 running (haven't upgraded yet) on an XP/SvcPack3/PIII600. Did the install when XP Home was running on SvcPack 2, though. Runs without a hitch.

Den,
Did you try installing this update for the reader? Have been purposely ignoring it, since everything is status quo on the Encore Pro front.

My thing is I need the 64 bit environment. If you put 4GB of ram or higher on your system now with a 32bit system. Your entire 4GB of RAM will not be allocated completely. It will come out to 3.25 or 3,325MB. I have 4GB now and I still need another 4GB more. Running virtualization takes up memory. I could simply dump another machine on my desk. That's what I'm trying to avoid. I want to eliminate machines & wires. Since I recently moved I've dumped 1 server & a firewall. I had to scale down my network dramatically.

In your case, what about running a VMWARE virtual machine with an XP or Vista 32-bit OS inside it?

I'm testing now, Virtualbox, WMWare & Virtual PC. Next week I might start testing Hyper V. I'm looking for the best performance.

What about a dual-boot system? 64-bit Vista plus 32-bit XP?

Wow, I haven't done that in a while. Might consider that. A little tricky when you have a RAID 0+1.

VMWare workstation supports USB devices. In theory, it should work (software + card reader) under a XP virtual machine, but I haven't tested it.
I used Virtual PC 2007. I'll be testing Hyper-V later, but I know Hyper-V doesn't support USB devices yet.

Yes, but ..... I tried VMWare on a 32-bit Vista computer to add an XP virtual machine and it was a complete bomb. It did something to my home network connection so that I couldn't communicate with the outside world. As soon as I removed VMWare, the network worked just fine.
Someone I know did some web surfing and found references to network problems running VMWare under Vista. Dual-boot is cleaner and doesn't add the overhead.

I didn't know that. Chalk another thing to the book section "Stuff that doesn't work on Vista"
Now, I am curious if it would run on Linux (ie: linux host, XP guest, smart card reader, encore software).

I don't know about that combination. But I do have EncorePro working on 32-bit Vista with Smartcard reader. It won't install on 64-bit Vista, however.
