WOW. I just read most of that threat at "the other board". I considered joining to add my 2 cents occasionally, but after reading that user agreement and their threats to contact my ISP etc if I violated any of their rules of free speech I decided that I didn't want any part of that group. I have my opinions and whether or not someone agrees with me I don't care to be part of a group where I can't freely express them.
As for the big brother approach to CPAP, and medicine in general in this country I am constantly amazed and appalled. From cough syrup with codine to the cold remedies that are now behind the pharmacy counters so we all suffer, just so a small group can't make crystal meth, the government is ruling our lives. I believe that those who want to cook crystal meth will get their ingrediants whether or not we all suffer trying to get our cold remedies. It is my life and if I want to pump air into my lungs and risk setting it too high and causing damage or centrals then I should have that right (not that any law would stop me anyway).
You folks who go over there and argue at the other board have more patience than I could ever have.

OOPs didn't mean to post as a guest. I thought I was signed in.
Now I can't change my typo (threat was thread). Actually it is funny that I made that typo given the user agreement I was referring to later in the note.

I entirely agree, Velbor.
That the ASAA should have an organizational right to take various health-related positions and enforce those positions on
their own message board seems entirely reasonable to me. I personally hope that newcomers to sleep apnea manage to find several message boards with differing views and policies---so that they might decide for themselves which path to pursue in their health quest.
I personally feel that it would be a travesty to convert the ASAA message board into a clone of cpaptalk.com. Just as I feel that it would be a travesty to expect everyone here to maintain the same values and express the same views.
I think many of us are here for the same reason that I am: because we strongly prefer to think, breathe, and act independently. Why then should we even implicitly disallow others---even organizations---the independence to act in accordance with their own deeply considered charters and policies?
Have we become a religion?
Didn't I mention a religious war, a while back?
Why there's even a very respected member on our very own forum that uses this line in his signature:
Envisioned Battle Lines: Apnea on the left side... the rest of us very wisely rallying on the other
.
We're just rallying ... though sometimes, its kinda hard to tell the difference.

We are also the "fringe" of cpap users and not the placid sheep they would want us to be. Maybe we get better treatment that way. I would hope so.
I think for the run of the mill OSA patient, cpaptalk offers a lot of help in treating OSA, helping with mask issues (LEAKS - can I say LEAKS!!!) , getting data capable machine information out there, and in giving the CPAP user ideas to take back to their own physicians. We can provide support to get the newbie from pre testing to post testing.
I think if the person has other severe or serious health conditions, then taking matters into your own hands can be dangerous. Of course seeing some doctors can also be dangerous so it could be a "damned in you do, damned if you don't" scenario.
Apneasupport.org has its set of rules. You post there you are obligated to follow them. If you don't like them, move on. I again give them the right to determine what their rules are.
I am not going to openly personally attack any moderator there, past or present. It doesn't accomplish much to throwing the dirty laundry out for everyone to see.
Let's just let ASAA have their forum and we have ours.
Theirs is allegedly "non-profit" but then you wonder who foots the bills with all the corporate sponsors.
We already know we are the best.

But I was just beginning to get warmed up to the subject when I thought it best to quit whilst I was ahead.
I can understand their restraints in that forum. BUT ......
who cares? That clown is a hypocrite and a flake anyway. That guy would love nothing more but to see this forum and others like it be shut down and go away, he as so much as said so on his own site. He once used that non-profit forum as a venue to slam this board and Johnny's business practices. When I caught him in the act and exposed the slimeball, he left and hasn't come back since. I say good riddens to him.
I've been on this board since it started, been buying my equipment from cpap.com before then, I have not once seen them solicit a single dime from anyone to keep it up and running. By comparison, that slimeball gets a "donation card" included in the Owners manual of every CPAP machine that ships out in the US to keep it up and running. Then he has the gull to use that same venue to slam this board and others because they don't participate in his good ole boy network and rip everyone off like the others.
If people really want to know whats up with their therapy or machine, they usually end up coming here. If you don't know it already, sleep medicine in general is a racket and money grab, it is amazing the ways they have found to exploit that.
One way is telling everyone it is illegal to change your own settings and/or take control over your own therapy. Out of thousands of posts I've responded to over the years, I don't know of a single person who has croaked as a result of what I've suggested. The one I really like is it is "dangerous" to set your pressure too high, what is it going to do other than waking you up? Hell they were waking up during the night before the machine what's the difference.
I wouldn't worry about that wiener over there at all.

not illegal? whew! I had changed my lower setting from 8 to 9. so with all this talk I had just been practicing what to say to the DME police whtn they came to take my card...
...honest officer I didn't even know my settings were changed, I swear! It must have come that way...maybe the machine just changed itself.......(sweating)...my brother did it!!!
but seriously I should not take this so lightly, such a change without consulting my physician could be dangerous I am sure...
bad attitude...I must need sleep

You are absolutely right SWS and I agree completely.
I was just wanting to have a little fun ... but I can have just as much fun here (more actually).

When I was getting ready for my sleep study, I started to browse several boards and the one you all are speaking of was one I checked out. Needless to say, I wasn't seeing any REAL helpful information. Just complaints, with non specific answers. When I found this board with the HELPFUL suggestions and answers, I never looked back.
I am very THANKFUL I found this board pretty quickly, where everything is allowed and therefor some decent help is available to us all.

The topic has been closed on that other board. I think we should close it here too. Some of us have stopped talking about the issue and begun to personally attack someone. We know the feeling on each side. I, personally, am glad to be on the side of this board. We can just agree to disagree with them at this point. We can continue to do our thing and hope people with sleep apnea find us!

Well said Hawthorne.
We can just let them carry on their war on cpaps of mass destruction and hope the refugees find their way here.

In this case, Big Ed got the last word.
And, these are MY last words (on this thread).......CPAPTALK is the very best!

Well,
yeah... The only reason I posted the above question was because of that characteristically uplifting PM you sent me a few weeks ago. You said if I helped you get a message-board religion started that I could be a
"high-order priest and wear a fancy purple robe".
I thought if the consensus answer to my rhetorical question was an emphatic
"yes" that I might
finally get that fancy purple robe I've been longing for.

Johnny, thank you for giving is this open forum which - as no doubt you know - is extremely "
valuable to the many thousands who read these posts here in the United States and around the world."

Oh, I'm sooooo sorry, -SWS. I had to send that robe to your Aunt Weeza, she insisted she needed it for a mask ball - and I really couldn't refuse that kind old lady.
I still have the hose though... Will a high-order preist in fancy-hose do? ... Or was that supposed to be shmancy-hose? Somehing-hose, but I can't seem to remember the exact expression... RG knows, I'm sure.
