I never travel without it--some hotel rooms are awful!
sleepyred wrote:P.S. - on another note - my husband literally hates going into stores with scented odors and he loves the pur-sleep system! When I said I was going to participate in this trial - he rolled his eyes. Now he's wondering what I'm mixing next.....He said to give his thumbs up as well! He is wondering if you might try to develop something with a cinnamon smell.
I think that's the difference between synthetic smells and natural aromatics. Essential oils are so expensive compared to synthetics (not to mention the relatively limited selection of natural smells--no fruits and few flowers) that virtually every product with a smell is synthetic. Your husband probably hasn't experienced very many EOs. Many people find synthetics to be irritating and not very satisfying. I've had several people with multiple chemical sensitivity (who could not stand synthetic smells) do very well on the pur-sleep system.
The sense of smell is different from other senses for several reasons. There are some 10 million olfactory receptors. Unlike every other sense, the smell receptor neurons are in direct contact with the external environment. Also, olfactory neurons are directly connected with the higher parts of the brain and limbic system, the emotional centers of the brain. They are single, unbranched neurons that completely bypass the brain stem. As a result, our reactions to smell highly emotional and happen even at levels below conscious detection limits. The perception of pleasant smells also results in a cascade of other responses that result in very quick physiological (physical) relaxation, so it's not merely emotional (as shown through EEGs, MRIs, etc.).
In any event, the human nose can distinguish some 10,000 different smells. We can certainly tell the difference between natural aromatics (which typically consist of hundreds or thousands of different types of aromatic molecules) and synthetics (which typically consist of just a handful of molecules).
As for cinnamon, that's not on the radar screen. Cinnamon is highly stimulating--it really gets my heart racing--not the kind of thing that would work well for sleep. At least in my opinion.

Just to toss this into the mix - my mother and I are both highly sensitive to "synthetic" perfumes. She says she only wears French perfumes, because the French use natural essences, vs. the proliferation of synthetics in American perfumes.
I literally couldn't walk through the malls a few years ago, it made me so sick to my stomach. It's still hard sometimes to convince coworkers that their perfume is making me physically ill. They think I'm just faking it.
I've avoided alot of "armoatherapy" products because I didn't know that some were synthetic, and they gave me headaches. I've since become a more aware consumer and now am more willing to give the natural essences a try.
Cheers,
B.

i wouldn't get sick to my stomach but i would get huge headaches and sneezing fits; just driving behind a bus or truck briefly will give me an instant headache...i think i'm at my toxicity maximum...but that's another discussion)... i was reluctant to try the pur-sleep stuff even after i had ordered it because of the headache component...when i finally did i was so relieved to find that the scents are not at all irritating to me and no headaches at all; can't wait to get my new system!!!

Truth be told, most perfumes, even the French stuff, are made in whole or part from synthetics. Perfumes are about one third aromatic and two thirds alcohol by volume. Unless they're labeled to contain natural aromatics, they're most likely not.
It's no wonder perfumers rely on artificial smells: Synthetics are chemically stable, have an indefinite shelf-life, and are highly consistent from production run to run. They are inexpensive and can be "tweaked" to produce almost any smell. They are widely available and are not dependent on third-world production or seasonal crops.
One rule of thumb has to do with the nature of the smell. There are vey few true floral EOs that can even be had at any price (various roses and rose-like smells, ylang ylang, and jasmine are pretty much it) and they are very expensive. There are NO "fruit" essential oils except for citrus--anything with a fruit smell is fake and most citrus-smelling products are also synthetic. ALL "musk" smells are synthetic, though a few naturals are musk-like (such as rock rose resin and oak moss). The authentic "musk" smell is actually an animal product from deer in the arctic and isn't even an EO--but it's not commercially available anymore. Ambergris is a byproduct of the sperm whale's digestive process and is worth a fortune when it can be found (washed up on a beach). Of course commercial whaling of sperm whales to harvest ambergris is illegal. True sandalwood EO is extremely expensive--the trees take decades to mature. Most sandalwood fragrance is artificial just because of the cost.
In any event, most peole who find themselves to be sensitive to perfumes and other smells actually aren't sensitive to real essential oils. There's quite a difference.

Holistic "aromatherapy" is limited to the use of natural essential oils. While the practice is not illegal, a great many manufacturers of synthetically-fragranced products freely market them as "aromatherapy" (just browse around any BBW). No wonder so many people are confused!

Well I tried mine last night for the first time -- what a great experience.
I used 2 drops of the peace (I really like lavender). I'll be doing the Clear this evening and Spice tomorrow -- figure since SleepGuy was nice enough to send it out, I'll evaluate all 3 -- but having looked at the web site, I'm going to order some with the citrus fragrance to add to the mix.
The two drops was perfect. It didn't overwhelm the xPAP and I even noticed some residual about 4-5 hours later when I woke up for a BR break. The fragrance was gone by morning though -- but that's ok.... My wife did not notice any new smells in the room. Very mild -- We'll see what happens with Clear and Spice.....
I'll comment on the others as soon as I've used them, But my initial reaction is very positive. SleepGuy you have a winner!!!!!
Babs -- I've been wearing Pachouli (and Nag Champa) for 30+ years.....You must be a hippie too...... (I won't say "Old Hippie" cuz I know better -- I'm an old hippie!!!!!)
Thanks again SleepGuy -- great product!!!!!
cheers

How 'bout middle aged hippie? I'm 42. I was scarred by an early childhood spent in Eugene on the campus of UofO. I remember the streakers running through the campus buildings...
Of course, I had to ask my mommy about the dangly bits I couldn't identify... (Come to think of it, I still have that problem...)
LOL,

Hippie is in the heart -- not the age or the hair or the "put your descriptor here".....
I think my brother was working at UofO when that happened.....He's finally retired but he worked there forever....
Sheesh...you're only 4 years older than my oldest!!!! Just make me feel ancient why doncha
cheers

I received my pur-sleep , I don't like very strong aromas but decided to try this anyway. Like others have posted it seems to be a good qualitly workmanship and i had no leaking bottles, I received it on my b-day so it was a pleasant surprise added. Well, I tried it this morning when I got off work and I used the peace, I woke up twice but I didn't have my mask off as I usually do. and the scent was not overwhelming,I actually found it comfortating with the aroma. I will try the other two over the next few nights(actually days for me), but if the first one was any indication then I will definitely use it , and order more

No actually he did white mice.....
When the PETA folks came through his lab was the only one that didn't get trashed -- it was an unmarked door so nobody knew what was in there.....
We should start a new thread -- leave this one for SleepGuy's reviews.....
take care
cheers

[quote="goose"] I'm going to order some with the citrus fragrance to add to the mix.
The spice really does have a citrus fragrance to it - to me it smells like a cross between cloves and orange peel. It's quite nice. I wasnt' sure I would care for it but after trying it I do like it.
It's nice having three to choose from.....I think I'll go with peace tonight!
I do like this product!
Thank you Sleep Guy!

Pur-Sleep is great! I have had 2 great nights with great numbers! I have used Clear both nights. I am planning on trying Spice tonight. I didn’t give much info about the arrival of my Pur-sleep except to say it was the fastest shipment by the regular mail I have seen. Shipped on Monday, arrived on Wednesday, 2 states in 2 days!
Everything was in good shape and exactly as it should be. I could smell the scents together as I opened the package, but that may be from the other bottles that were stored with these before (or after) they were wrapped in plastic. This has helped my claustrophobia feelings a great deal! I even tried a new mask the 2nd night! (Resmed’s Liberty)
My husband is waiting for his titration study to get back to the Dr. so his CPAP can be ordered. If I continue to have such great nights, I will order the Deluxe Kit so we can share the oils and he will have his own diffuser!
Thanks again SleepGuy!

I tried the peace and clear last night (2nd night with this blend). Went to bed at 11:15 - asleep before I knew it, my hubby and kids came in with a storm holding our new Harry Potter book, and I never really knew what was going on. I slept to 8 a.m.!
This is a 1st! I have not slept through the night in so long!
I am ordering more essential oils today! This product is a wonderful addition to my cpap therapy. Thanks again SleepGuy!

Received my Put-Sleep yesterday, and used Clear last night. I found it to be very relaxing. I normal have a somewhat difficult time falling asleep but not with this produce. No leak bottles and was packaged very well. I will definitely buy more

Have been using clear and peace together since the 1st night and love it. I am falling asleep much faster and sleeping more deeply since I started using the PurSleep oils. I seem to awake much more rested and alert. I am ready to start the day as soon as my eyes open. That is not like me, I usually want to sit around and "wake up" before I even take my gown off, but not since I have been using the oils. I will continue to use the Pur Sleep oils, they make using cpap a lot easier.
The idea of using for travel is great since I agree with others, some hotel rooms just smell bad! I will be ordering the travel bag.
A suggestion, why not sell a starter package with the travel bag included? Just increase the price to cover the cost of the bag. Given the choice of a started kit with the bag and one with out, I would choose the one with for a few dollars more. Others might also.
Over all I rate the PurSleep system a 10.
Thanks Sleep Guy,
Gilda
