I am in a similar place as you are, magpie. Despite doing cardio about 4x/week and strength training 2x/week PLUS following Weight Watchers, I've gone from 158 lbs (okay for being 5'8") to 208 lbs in the past 2 years.
It's been incredibly depressing to try so hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle and still keep gaining weight so fast. I got the results of my sleep test and found out I have severe OSA with ~30 events/hour. Now I'm waiting on getting my xPAP machine, and once I start therapy, I'm hoping the diet & exercise plan I've been following will start making a difference.
Good Luck!!

When I decided to start loosing weight, I was extremely discouraged because I really didn't think it was possible. I had started by simply "trying" to eat better and "trying" to exercise on a daily basis. Like I said trying is not going to get you anywhere. You must be self-motivated and committed to changing yourself. The one thing i realized was that I could accomplish my goal but I knew I was going to need some help so I started doing research. I ended trying this all natural weight loss pill called Slim 9 which really got me to where I wanted to be. I went from being 217lbs down to 194lbs in about 2 months time. Of course I did commit myself to making the change and its the best thing I've ever done for myself. If you do choose to use diet pills, I recommend using
Slim 9 as it did help me. You should obviously do your own research and consult your doctor to make sure you can use which ever diet pill you would like to use. Good luck and keep pushing. It's all worth it once you see the results.

OSA does not have to be severe to mess you up: Mine was only 13 events per hour--(mild)
Before CPAP, I noshed continually--just to stay awake at work and while driving.
I weighed around 175 Last April (a lot for 4'11" tall) --I was exhausted, stressed, and 'round'.
In January, I started a medically monitored weight loss program--(weight 168)
I am now below 147 pounds and heading for the magic 125.
Cpap gave me the energy to add the extra walking and food preparation effort.
(Please note--I am not advertising for them because I didn't buy their products--that's a trap.)
Many also feel that heavily merchandised diet products (pills) are an even worse trap.
Shame on you if you are shilling for these crooks.

I really regret that, as a new member, I don't have a "spam" button yet.
To answer the OP's question in this very old thread, I made a conscious effort to lose weight (via Weight Watchers), but it has been much easier to lose weight since starting CPAP.
