My mother's cure for unwelcome callers

Thirtysome years ago my mother had a blank gun. Looked real, sounded real - and very loud. When she'd get prank calls, she'd just shoot it off right by the receiver then hang up. May not have accomplished much except to give a sense of satisfaction to imagine that the caller probably had to change their undies before they realized they'd been pranked back.

I bet they never call back

Caller ID may work, but it may be blocked by the sender. It might also be "spoofed" into showing wrong data.
Either is possible, and not too difficult to do.
