Machine says 10 events per hour. I call BS, and I have the proof
I recently got a new machine, the ResMed AutoCurve 10 VAUTO. For the 10 nights or so that I’ve had it, it tells me in the morning that I’m having 20-30 events per hour. This sounded a bit high to me, so I did a little test this evening. I put my nasal mask on for an hour and a half, but stayed awake the whole time. After that time, the machine reported 9.8 events per hour. How is that possible? I was awake. I was breathing. I didn’t stop breathing. I didn’t breathe out of my mouth.
Does anyone see this happening with their machine? Am I supposed to just ignore that data? What good is it if it’s telling me I’m experiencing apneas and hypopneas while I’m wide awake?

The machine doesn't know (or care) whether you're asleep or not.
It measures the duration and reduction of flow. That is the data, and it is accurate.

The machine doesn’t have to know whether or not I’m asleep. The point is, I knew I wasn’t asleep. How can there be “events” if I’m awake and breathing? When is there a reduction in flow if I’m breathing steady? Accurate? No way. I wasn’t having apneas and hypopneas when I was awake. Do you have “events” if you’re awake and breathing?Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Mon Feb 16, 2026 6:59 amThe machine doesn't know (or care) whether you're asleep or not.

Load it into SleepHQ and I'll show you.How can there be “events” if I’m awake and breathing?
Re: Machine says 10 events per hour. I call BS, and I have the proof
Yup.Do you have “events” if you’re awake and breathing?
Usually central crap following yawns, sighs, boredom, pending sleep.
Further, without EEG, you can't prove there wasn't some sleep during that period.

AAMOF, I would bet your life you had some NREM Stage 1 during your "experiment".

Why do you insist that just because one is awake, one can't have events (that meet the criteria of an apnea). Awake breathing is erratic and can have 10+ seconds of reduced or ceased flow.Jeff_Snore_No_More wrote: ↑Mon Feb 16, 2026 8:29 amThe machine doesn’t have to know whether or not I’m asleep. Here's me talking on the phone, while wearing the machine. This demonstrates exactly what I originally stated, "The machine doesn't know (or care) whether you're asleep or not. It measures the duration and reduction of flow. That is the data, and it is accurate."

You’re comparing breathing while talking to laying in bed doing nothing, not talking. Of course breathing changes while talking. Apples and oranges. Thanks for the talking data, but I wasn’t talking.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Mon Feb 16, 2026 9:19 amWhy do you insist that just because one is awake, one can't have events (that meet the criteria of an apnea). You mean I wouldn’t know if I fell asleep, even for a short time? I was awake the whole time, reading.

No, the point I was making was one can have events while awake because, you\ve been insisting that one can't have events while awake. Nor was I suggesting that you were talking.Jeff_Snore_No_More wrote: ↑Mon Feb 16, 2026 9:26 am

Here's one I experienced, about a minute, after I put my machine on and was wide awake. You can tell I was awake by the erratic breathing.
