Brand new user, is this normal?
Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
Just wanted to add that Vitamin D is crucial to the central nervous system serotonin pathway (the one that ends with melatonin), so it also has a significant impact on sleep. If you're deficient, you definitely need to supplement it, but again you should be taking it in the morning for the best results. Taking it in the evening conflicts with the melatonin cycle and will interfere with your quality of sleep.
So it's not as simple as "X supplement helps sleep" but also that it is timed appropriately.

Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
This is great info. I do indeed take magnesium and D in the evening. I can switch those to morning. I also take other supplements and haven't really thought about whether they affect sleep but most I'm supposed to take 2 or 3 times a day, so kinda also have to take in the evening or at least with dinner, maybe not bedtime. Red yeast rice, glucosamine-condroitin, B1 and AREDS.
Good news, had another great night, didn't even get up to pee.
The memory foam mask hasn't arrived yet, so I took the advice of the coach who said he himself has used CPAP for 24 years. He suggested wiping the silicon cushion AND my skin with alcohol, which is totally counter intuitive if I have dry skin. But I did it. I also loosened the straps. This morning my skin is better. Still kind of red but not as much dry flaking.
Might just have been loosening the fit. My record says high leak 0, pressure 7. So with no significant leaks with looser straps I might have had them too tight. No idea if the guy's alcohol suggestion had anything to do with it.
I'm guessing the memory foam mask will be better, looking forward to it.

Gramps had wild dreams all night when he took melatonin. I told him to stop the melatonin. Stubborn man took it for six weeks before stopping.

People have undiagnosed sleep apnea. They get sucked in by the huge supplement industry and spend money on things that don't benefit themselves. I see it all the time.

Glad to hear things are improving, GrandmaA. Yes, I would recommend shifting vitamin and mineral supplements to morning if you they are a single daily dose.
Is the alcohol wipe the only thing you are using to clean the mask cushion? I wouldn't apply it to your skin (since it's dry) but for the cushion I suspect the method of action is to break down/remove oils to prevent the silicon cushion from slipping when you're wearing the mask (the same would apply to your skin if it was oily, but since it's dry I would suggest trying just wiping the cushion). For me personally, I use a mild detergent marketed for CPAP masks to clean mine each day.
I generally recommend getting bloodwork done to assess whether you are suffering from a deficiency before starting on supplements, though, especially with B6 as the toxicity levels are surprisingly low (and yet it is a common additive to many medications, so it quite easy to reach the lower threshold of ~20mg above which some people start reporting peripheral neuropathy).

Unfortunately true, but also many people (at least here in Australia) are actually deficient in Vitamin D - it's incredibly common. Magnesium is another one that is easy to be deficient in (both my wife and I were deficient).ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 11:27 amPeople have undiagnosed sleep apnea. Yes.
The U.S. supplement industry is $40 billion dollars and growing. If everyone were tested for deficiencies before starting, the industry would collapse.

They are expensive. Maybe I can drop some of them if treating the OSA makes me healthier.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 11:27 amPeople have undiagnosed sleep apnea. The red yeast rice I'm taking instead of a statin, which my cardiologist wanted to put me on. I tried the RYR first and it has brought my cholesterol down and the cardiologist is happy.
The gludcosamine-condroitin is for osteo-arthritis. I've already had a total hip replacement.
The B1, my neuro has me taking for peripheral neuropathy. And the AREDS is just to help decrease my risk of macular degeneration.
Yes the alcohol is the only thing I'm using. My skin seems even better today. Maybe it was loosening the tension. I should get the new mask soon and try that and see which I like better. It might have different cleaning instructions.AusJ wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 8:12 pmGlad to hear things are improving, GrandmaA. I do get bloodwork done. I know about B6 toxicity and its association with PN and don't supplement with that.

Manesium in the evening is frequently recommended to promote better sleep. So what's your source for that comment?

Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
If you do an online search you'll find other people report vivid dreams and more nightmares from taking magnesium in the evening. If you don't experience this, great.AusJ wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 6:46 pmYes, magnesium can have a beneficial effect on sleep (mainly if you're deficient). However, if you take it in the evening, you increase the risks of magnesium-induced dreams/nightmares. Unfortunately research on this side-effect is lacking, so all we have is anecdotal evidence (mine included) that indicates taking it in the morning is better than the evening to avoid that side-effect.

Since we're into anecdotes, one is as good as the other:
I have been taking magnesium in the evening for many years. Doing fine.
People reading this thread will simply have to make their own trials, and see what works best for them.

Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
I started magnesium in the first place at the order of a doctor, to help with muscle tension and cramps. It does help with that. I used to wake up with terrible leg cramps but since the magnesium, I don't anymore.
If it gives me more vivid dreams, that's a good thing for me because they're always really good, very rarely bad and virtually never what you'd call a nightmare.

Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
When we remember having dreams, it means we awakened. That's not a good thing.
If we sleep through dreams unaware, that, of course, is good thing.

True, I only remember the last one before I wake up in the morning. But it's usually really good, and the memory doesn't last very long. I end up just remembering it was really good, but not exactly what happened.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 8:41 amWhen we remember having dreams, it means we awakened. Re: Brand new user, is this normal?
That app does the same thing that the app they told me to download does. It's "React Health" and does the same QR code thing. Every morning when I disconnect the machine, the display lights up with a QR code and I open the app and point the phone at the code and it loads that night's report onto my phone.Pugsy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 8:09 pmThere is a software that works with the Luna 3.

I know nothing at all about it or how it works.
Apparenlty it is also sending the reports to Apria.
But this morning for the first time, no report. I slept 8 hours and didn't even get up to pee and was looking forward to a great report but nothing, it's like it didn't record it. I called Apria and they didn't get it either. They didn't have any good answer as to why it didn't record but told me to unplug it and plug it back in and I did. That did not bring up last night's report but I'm hoping tomorrow morning will be back to normal.
Has this happened to anyone else? The only thing different is that earlier in the evening, around 6 pm, I tried on the mask and let it start for just a moment to show my husband how it worked and of course I got a "bad" report with 0 hours use. Normally if I had a short operative period, it's rolled into the total for the night, or it ignores the one minute. Like if I start it up but stop to readjust the mask, it will give me a bad report but the next day the bad one is gone and the total for the night is good. But this time it blocked recording the subsequent 8 hours of sleep entirely.
Any ideas?

Is the SD card inserted properly (or in there at all)?
