Bad dry mouth

Post by bucko » Mon Oct 07, 2024 6:06 pm

My humidity level is set to 8 and my hose temp is 84 F

3 hrs in I wake you with my mouth literally glued shut from dry mouth. If I increase humidity level higher I get rainout.

Any solutions to stop my dry mouth?

Using a nasal-only interface and breathing through your mouth causes more than one problem.

I'm 17 years in with CPAP therapy and have failed to stop dry mouth (very dry mouth). I've tried every suggestion found here and elsewhere without success. I can even tape my mouth shut with the strongest tape and still manage to mouth breathe during sleep. About once a month I wake without a dry mouth. All I can figure is that for some unknown reason, I did not mouth breath that night. I can't replicate a no-mouth-breathing night. I sometimes mouth breath awake due to air flow restrictions in my nose which is another reason I hesitate to use tape over my mouth because sometimes I must mouth breathe.

No humidity setting will prevent dry mouth for me. When I mouth breathe the air movement from the machine drys my mouth out so badly it even wakes me sometimes.

Some have success with mouth taping, chin straps, collars, and mouthpieces to prevent the jaw from opening. None of those including Xymelts or Biotene have worked for me but maybe will for you.

I have chronic (24x7) dry mouth. For years, I have put one stick of Trident sugarless gum between my lower molars and my cheek. I put another stick on the other side between my upper molars and my cheek. This is about 90% effective for me. Occasionally, I awaken with a dry mouth and just run the tip of my tongue over the two sticks. This gets the saliva flowing again. During the day, one stick of gum does the trick. My GP and my dentist have each approved this.

Have you had your airway examined by an ENT?

I've been trying out the tape thing for about a week. It seems to be working good. Takes a little to get used to, but it has stopped my dry mouith.

By eliminating mask leaks, the tape also improved the chances you could use your nasal-only interface and be effectively treated.

Nah, lifetime script for Azelastine and Fluticasone which I just recently began supplementing with Oxymetzoline on nights the nose gets slammed shut on one side or both. I am allergic to everything in the air in my area, the allergy capital of the universe.
