I've always run a fan in the bedroom, even in the winter. I like air moving and I like some continuous noise of some sort. During my sleep study, their machine kept me awake for a while, it seemed to have a regular cadence, as I breathed. I told myself at that point that I wouldn't have that problem at home, I would just crank up the fan a notch and it would be OK. I never hear the machine over the gentle steady fan noise. I became accustomed to the steady noise thing while in the service, sleeping on ships and aircraft. It works for me. You do what you have to to make things work somehow.

Sleepy-eyes,
If Linda's suggestion to stop feeding them BEANS doesn't work, try
TEENY TINY corks.

harikarishimari wrote:I have discovered earplugs that are very gentle and very effective. (sorry I don't remember the brand, I bought a whole box of them online somewhere). I became addicted to using them when I am flying. I travel a lot for my work, fly commercial, military (as a passenger), and I also pilot small planes (VERY noisy, yes). And then I started using them at home when I sleep with the Remstar AUTO, which makes a little noise, I admit.
The problem becomes when the alarm goes off and I don't hear it. So hubby has to wake me up and then maybe he goes back to bed to wait for his alarm clock. But that's a different kind of problem. Or if he gets up and goes to work before my alarm goes off, then I have a REAL problem. I think if my APAP used a gas powered lawn mower engine, I still would not hear it. Well maybe.
I will edit this post when I can remember what brand they are and where I bought them, if anyone is interested.

ok, i found the name of the earplugs. This probably won't help Sleepy-eyes, as she has already solved the problem, and can't use earplugs anyway. Maybe somebody else will find this useful, even if only for flying they are made by Howard Leight company, and they are the AIRSOFT type:

...and I don't remember where I bought them online, but I got a box of 100 pr for very cheap. I found them today on amazon:
