How do you calculate CPAP energy costs?

Post by evanwolf » Wed Sep 06, 2023 5:50 pm

I'm trying to calculate how much of my energy bill is due to my resmed. It's plugged in all the time. Is there a formula folks use?

Get yourself a kill-a-watt device and measure it for a week. Multiply by 52. Should get you a decent estimate for annual electrical consumption. Then you can move on to your refrigerator. Your TV. Etc etc. https://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electri ... 84471&th=1

The fridge is the kicker.
An old one will eat you out of house and home.
If your icebox is over 10 years old, it is more brown than green.

Aside from "why not", estimating needs for a back-up power source would be a good reason I suppose.

= 36.5 kw/year x $0.1283/kwh = $4.69 per year or $4.71 per leap year

hmm that’s pretty good, seeing it like that.

I think there will be slight regional differences but negligible

kwh here is closer to 13.5 cents

Let's take a simple example. A CPAP machine typically consumes 30 to 60 watts without a heated humidifier. Let's assume it's consuming 50 watts. And it's running 8 hours a day for a year. So total power consumtion is 8*50*365/1000kw=146kw
Now lets assume avg kwh unit rate is 25 cents so electric bill will be 0.25*146= $36.5

Compared to your refrigerator, your air-conditioner, your computers, your heating (if it's electric), your stove/oven (if they're electric), your washing machine & dryer, and your dishwasher, it's minuscule.

Also, what is the use of knowing this?

You err because the device only draws as much current as needed--as it is needed.
Devices are rated for maximum current--useless for calculations.
Measurement is the only way to get an accurate number.
Even a clock draws uneven current, due to internal friction.
Get a Kill-a-Watt. It's worth it--and loads of fun.

@chunkyfrog @emenite Thanks, folks.

Yes, I agree that measurement beats estimation, until measurement costs more than I'd likely save (in this case).

These back of the napkin calculations come to about $5 a month at my local energy rates. But you're right, this is probably high since it peaks for the hours I'm asleep.

Why did I ask? I was trying to decide if it was worth trying for a partial subsidy for operational costs.
