Can you elaborate on this (adjustment of threshold), perhaps with a citation?
I know that the threshold is labile, and I also know the whole picture of breath regulation is very complicated indeed. Wish I could dig out references for you, but I'm not having luck tracking them down.
If you have information about this, I'd love to learn more.

Yes, breathing regulation is complex, and relies on several systems working cooperatively.
Take it for what it's worth, here is a video that gives a nice overview of the elements that go into breathing regulation.

I'll send you a PM to detail how one of those elements may be an initiating factor in what many suggest is an arousal caused clear airway apnea.
