My first night and I have a problem – Can any one please help

Post by Zapper » Wed May 31, 2023 6:43 pm

Hi every one , just been diagnosed as having sleep apnea . The doctor recommended that I use a CPAP machine ( Resmed 10 + Resmed F20 mask ) So last night was my first night using the Resmed machine but I had a problem.

When I first put the mask on and switched the Resmed machine on , every thing seemed to be working well . The mask felt comfortable and there were no mask leaks . But about ½ an hour later I started to notice that there was an instant rush of increased air pressure into the mask which started making the mask to instantly leak air . I then re tightened the mask , but that made no difference. The increased air pressure now coming into the mask was just to much that I had to take off the mask and switch the machine off.

I have attached my Oscar results for that first night and I am hoping that some one here can help me with this problem.

Thank you.

hi zapper! i'm zonker!

you might try looking to you tube for some mask fitting videos. make sure you put the name of your mask in the search terms. if there is more than one video, look at them all for any tips.

one i can give you right up front is to make sure you are applying your mask while laying down.

and just btw? other than that mask fit, you seem to be doing well.

good luck!

Hi and a big thank you 🙏

Do you think that the increase in mask air pressure after about ½ an hour was due to the mask its self not being fitted correctly . If so I’m wondering why if the problem is due to a mask leak , it only started after ½ an hour and not straight away after first putting the mask on.

It is counter-intuitive, but modern masks often leak when something is too tight more than too loose. I know that I, for one, wore my masks way too tight for weeks before I figured out to leave just a little slack so that the pressure could gently inflate the mask against my skin.

Few of us get it just right the first night or two. The main thing at first is to keep at it and not to give up as you find what works for you. I mean, people like Zonker and me eventually figured it out enough to get benefit from PAP, and so will you.

As for the half-hour thing, it may be that there is a ramp setting keeping pressure artificially low at the start of the night. That helps many people starting out get used to wearing the mask so that pressure won't increase until they are asleep.

Just remember that when starting PAP therapy, your brain will tell you the pressure is a lot, even though it is actually not much pressure, really. Your brain knows it is different from the usual, so it exaggerates the feeling. Eventually, if you keep on with it, the pressure will feel like nothing at all because your brain will be used to it and will welcome it as the life-improving miracle that it is.

Welcome. You WILL get there. And everyone in this forum will be of whatever help we can be. If not, Zonker will gladly refund you whatever it cost you to join cpaptalk.com.

Per the above report the ramp is set to OFF.

Something changed though to cause such a rather abrupt increase in pressure. My first thought was either sleeping position like was on one's side and rolled over onto one's back or maybe one of those chin tuck situations.

I was wondering about why such an abrupt change in pressure after ½ an hour , as for my sleeping position . I first slept on my side but as soon as the increase in mask pressure , apart from re tightening the mask , I then changed sleeping position to attempt to sleep on my back , which had no effect as the increase in mask pressure continued . Is it possible that the increase in mask pressure could be some how related to a Resmed machine setting by any chance.

stick with me, kid, i'll put you right.

i THINK that pressure increase was due to the high mask leak. but i could be wrong.

lazurus will let us know.

Not that I can see on the above report.

Auto ramp will do it but you have ramp OFF. Have you messed with that setting at all....at any time????

A dramatic increase in flow limitations or snores will do it but again I don't see it in the above report.

Did you ever really go to sleep during that short period of time last night?

Yeah, the 'something' was some change in breathing, then an OA, which caused the pressure to jump up. Now, what that caused that breathing disturbance, no clue to that.
