Is my F&P SleepStyle machine defective?

Post by MJS_ » Sat Apr 01, 2023 2:41 am

Hello everyone! Having waiting 21 months for my doctors office, "medical group", and health insurance (in California there are three levels of bureaucracy to navigate rather than two, all of which blame each other for delays) to finally process my referral for a sleep study (which as I expected concluded I had severe obstructive apnea), I decided to pay for equipment myself rather than wait more weeks or months for the multiple bureaucracies to process my DME referral (my insurance plan covers 80% of the cost of "durable medical equipment"). Youtube reviews led me to the Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle machine which I've had for two days now. I noticed after using the machine for several hours, the bottom of the device gets quite warm. I also noticed that nine hours after having turned off the machine (but keeping it plugged in), the bottom of the machine seemed just as warm as when I first turned it off. Is this normal? What is the machine doing to burn so much energy while it is off? Is there any reason not to unplug it when not using it?

ADDENDUM: The machine soon cooled off when unplugged, and heated up again when plugged back in but not turned on. The machine is silent when turned off and nearly silent when turned on. AFAIK, the machine seems to work as expected when turned on.

Did you notice the return policy?

Yes. Do you have reason to think something is wrong with it?

If you have a humidifier hooked up to the machine (did it come with one?) but with no water in it, the water tank will be 'burning' when machine's in use - either add water or take out the tank (check manual for info).

I removed the water tank after turning the machine off. The humidifier is at the top of the machine, but it is the bottom of the machine that gets warm when plugged in.

Somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory I seem to remember people being concerned about the physical temperature of their cpap machines which while plugged into a power source...weren't powered up and blowing air.
I want to think it might have been the F & P machines that people were talking about but I can't swear to it and we don't have near as many F & P users on the forum as we used to have.

Now even if it was a common "complaint" that was really baseless worry....we have no way to know just how "hot" the machine feels to you and how it might compare with a "all machines when plugged in will generate a little bit of heat".

So we don't know if what you are experiencing is normal or not. It all depends on just how "warm" it is.

You might contact F & P support and ask them.

Thanks. I couldn't find a customer support email or phone number for F&P Healthcare products. Their website has a "Product Enquiries" form that appears intended for businesses rather than customers, but it does not work. So I sent an email inquiry to the store that sold it to me: DirectHomeMedical. I think F&P may be phasing out their US distribution; most online stores were out of stock.

I chose this machine mostly for the SenseAwake feature, which automatically lowers the pressure when it detects you waking up and then ramps it back up when you've fallen back asleep. Since I wake up a few times each night to urinate (due to BPH), this seemed helpful. I've read the ResMed machines have an Auto-Ramp feature that increases the pressure when it detects you've fallen asleep (but does not lower it when you are waking). To use this Auto-Ramp feature after waking, would it need to be manually reset or the machine turned off and on?

Yes. To use the ResMed auto ramp feature the machine has to be turned off and restarted to reset it BUT ResMed machines have a feature that can be enabled that will shut the machine off for you once you take the mask off (or unhook it) after about 10 seconds and this means that the auto ramp thing will get started again once the machine comes back on again once a person gets hooked back up to the machine.

It occurs to me there may be an advantage to turning the CPAP machine off to re-start the auto-ramp feature. When I look at the daily reports that my F&P machine generates and sends via bluetooth to my F&P smartphone app, the reports do NOT indicate how many times I woke up (even though the machine's "SensAwake" feature is supposed to detect when you wake up). I think turning the machine off and on would make this information easy to see.

I also tried loading the data from my F&P machine's USB drive to the OSCAR program. The only part of the OSCAR reports that I have some understanding of (so far) is the summary statistics, which do not clearly indicate how many times I woke up during a session. It does provide a statistic for the SensAwake feature, but I think this number may include episodes of momentary or near wakefulness (for which I have no memory) in addition to times I was fully awake (I wake up to urinate). How easy is it to see in the OSCAR reports how many times I woke up during a session?
