I am a mouth breather AND when I use my F30 mask I get these burps out the side of the mask as soon as my facial muscles relax at all. I've read that lots of people tape their mouths while using a nasal pillow mask. Why wouldn't I want to do that as well?
I've been a p10 pillows user for years, and use tape for 2 reasons: keep mouth closed, and keep air from escaping from mouth corners. I've been thinking of getting a backup full face mask, specifically the ResMed F30, but from your comment (and others) I'm beginning to think that a "full face mask" like the F30 won't do the job of keeping air from escaping through the mouth with a slight jaw drop.
That's unfortunate as I was hoping that the F30 would eliminate my need for taping. Also, I've read that the F30 could be made much better if it had nasal pillows instead of its current design. There are more than a few people looking forward to an F30 V2.
For tape, I've been using the 3M 2" Micropore tape. It was cheap and I bought it in a 6-pack a long time ago. I can actually divide it in 1/2 length-wise and use it successfully as a 1" tape to accomplish those 2 goals stated above. It's very strong and keeps the chin from dropping enough to part the lips. The disadvantage of the 3M Micropore tape is that it's super strong if additionally pressed to the skin to get a good seal. I have to do that to ensure it's a good seal otherwise it gets pulled apart easily. I can also work with the 2" wide tape by continuing the middle part down to the chin, but keep the L & R sides to 1" so that it doesn't rip too much skin when removing from those sensitive areas under the lower lips.
I read that someone suggested sticking it to the arms a few times first so that it's not so permanent when applying. It does leave a slight sticky residue which requires soap (twicee) to remove in the morning.
I wish I didn't have to use it, as removal does make my skin a little raw in the mornings, but it allows people like me to wear an absolutely minimalist mask like the P10, and that's a big win.
The MedVance Silicone Tape sounds wonderful, but $15 is rather expensive for one 5-yard roll, but it does offer advantages over the 3M Micropore. The 3M Micropore tape can stick too much, making removal problematic, but it also can allow air to pass through - making it less than perfect for sealing sometimes.
One day, there will be a new invention for keeping one's mouth sealed. I read a small book from a doctor with CPAP that asked a dentist to put some caps on some teeth, along with a latch, to keep her mouth closed (not kidding).
