AVEO tsd Is is worth trying ?

Post by Albatros » Sun Nov 27, 2022 2:16 am

I read somewhere about a very simple "solution" for apnea:

it is the AVEO tsd device which uses suction by inserting the tongue into a medical silicone "bubble" which prevents it from falling backwards into the throat and thus increases the airway volume.

The statement makes sense, but does it work?
I would be interested in your opinion.

Thank you

Even if it works, would you want to go to sleep that way? And guarantee you'd be happy with it and keep it in place all night?

It doesn't work. You have to do the work.

Gramps bought one years ago. Both of us have tried it numerous times. Very uncomfortable and hard to keep attached. Neither of us ever kept it in for as much as an hour.

I read somewhere about a very simple "solution" for apnea:
If a person could keep it attached, it would only be a treatment for apnea if that person's sole cause of apnea was the tongue blocking the airway. It could also be that the soft palate collapses into the airway - the device does not help this.

I like the idea. It didn't work for either of us. YMMV.

A better solution "might" be minimally-invasive tongue base suspension - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15046416/

Not really.
I strongly disagree with any gadget that discourages or delays
effective cpap therapy.
It's a crying shame these charlatans get away with what they do.

I know what you're saying and love my CPAP therapy because it lets me sleep and keeps me, you know, breathing, but it's kind of barbaric and a pain in the ass. I hope we never stop looking for a better solution.

On a scale of inconvenience and discomfort, I put CPAP very low on the "barbarism" scale compared to many other treatments like mandibular advancement surgery, other "apnea surgeries", MAD's, electrical stimulation devices, even the orthodontia my daughter had to go through (but I'm really glad she did it anyway, to avoid the problems I live with).

Orthodontia may have slightly exacerbated my OSA,
but my brother had apnea and no ortho.
As for the orthodontics; between the bullying and my fragile psyche,
I might not have survived to adulthood without it.
They fixed my overbite and saved my spirit--I can deal with cpap.

No doubt. It's way easier to put on a mask to sleep than to put up with any number of other medical indignities.

I'd still rather not, though, so hopefully they'll keep plugging away at the research and science.

I expect they will--some day.
Too many die too soon because it is too hard for some to adapt to cpap.

If there was just one cause of sleep apnea that might be true, although there are many treatment approaches.

In my case, it's the structural architecture of my airway as a result of a genetic disorder--receded and small chin (micrognathia), narrow arched palate, narrowed airway, plus low muscle tone. I had retraction orthodontia as a kid, and 4 teeth extracted, so that made it even worse. I could probably be treated with mandibular advancement and a lot more orthodontia, but at my age I can't imagine subjecting myself to that pain, discomfort, and risk, let alone cost not just of the procedures but the downtime since I'm self-employed. My daughter did have some discomfort with the orthodontia, but she didn't start off with such poor architecture to begin with and the Herbst Appliance worked to give her about 3 mm more of airway space, which is a lot considering a non-surgical approach. She has a beautiful, wide smile, a bit of a chin, and a patent airway. My hope is that she will never need CPAP because we were able to be proactive for her.

That's the definition of obstructive sleep apnea.

Epigenetics could also play a factor. It often does.
