Duration short

Post by Saltyfeet » Sat Nov 19, 2022 9:23 am

New user for two months. I find mask is off when
Waking in the morning, usage is only 1-2 hours. It took
Me 4-5 weeks to get used to mask and can now
Fall asleep. Any ideas to extend use?

Mike

BTW, are you checking your AHI and leak level for the periods you do sleep with the mask? If the AHI or leak is high, the user is more likely to remove the mask.

It would help us help you if we knew what mask you are using.

It would also help us help you if we knew whether you think a leaky mask is part of the problem.

But in flying blind, there are three suggestions I can offer:

1) Taping the mask to your face might help. What I'm suggesting is using a couple of small pieces of tape (one on each side) that are perpendicular to the frame of the mask. When you remove the mask in your semi-conscious sleep state, the tape will cause a slight bit of tugging and that may help wake you up enough for you to realize what you are doing. And then you can consciously make the decision to not remove the mask after all.

2) If your machine has a "Smart Start" or "Smart On/Off" setting, make sure that setting is OFF. That way if you take the mask off, your machine will still continue to blow air rather than turning itself off after a few minutes. If the air continues to blow for quite a while, you make wake up wondering why there's all this air blowing in your face or on your arms, and you'll find out the mask is off when there's still time to put the mask back on and go back to sleep.

3) If your machine has a "Large Leak" alarm, make sure it is set to ON. That way when you take the mask off, the machine will detect a large leak and start beeping. That may wake you up enough for you to realize that the mask is off and you can then put it back on and return to sleep.
