How long does it last?

Post by sidesleeper7 » Mon Nov 14, 2022 5:22 pm

Think I have this machine somewhat figured out, but after using for a few days just starting therapy I feel more tired than before starting .. ahi is 1-2 and #s look good .. is this normal in the beginning? If so how long will / should it last? I did feel more refreshed this morning / more vivid dreams .. but eyes are still burning some and feel more tired / mood does seem to be improved today.

Thanks 😊

My take is that there is no "normal" with early initial reactions to PAP, since there is quite a bit of variety in reports of how people feel at the start of therapy. Some feel better right away; others begin to feel better later on. Others are on the therapy mostly to prevent future problems with their health and to supplement other efforts for health improvement, which requires good breathing and good sleep.

Many treatments in many areas of medicine seem to have no immediate perceptions of improvement and may even seem to make things slightly worse before there is noticeable improvement.

According to the ResMed dudes:

The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

It’s hard to say if the problem lies in the medical professionals or the consumers of healthcare but often there’s an expectation of instant gratification and if it’s not there then the “therapy doesn’t work “.

I am not suggesting that is the case wrt the OP but merely building on what lazarus is saying.

My attitude where the body needs time to heal is that it could compare to diet and exercise in that it takes time.

Everyone is different though and I started feeling better a few weeks after I found this forum and feel like the improvement continues every day. I have been papping since july.

It’s normal for improvement to be gradual. In your original post, you report some improvement after just a few days, so I predict you’ll do well. No one can say how long it’ll take for you to feel like yourself again. It could be another week or month; for some of us it took longer.

This is a really good time to think about other aspects of your sleep. Are you sleeping 8 hours a night? Do you keep a regular sleep schedule? Do you limit caffeine and alcohol as needed?

Are you sleeping pretty comfortably with your machine and gear? If not, what bothers you? We’d like to help however we can.

Funny you should say that.

I can barely remember the “old self “.

The mind mostly recalls the tears cried on the sofa and sobbing, “I don’t understand why I am so tired all the time. “

Yes, stick to it. Patience will be your friend.

Sleep debt is certainly a thing for some people. Also, even fast adapters are going to be bothered some at first by having an alien on their face blowing air up their nose.

Are you feeling more tired all the time? Or is it you're feeling a need, a wanting to sleep? Or wanting to sleep more hours?

Untreated sleep apnea keeps our brains and bodies on the alert 24/7, the brain jogging you awake again and again in an attempt to make you breathe.
Could it be that you are now feeling the general relaxation and simply yearning for more of that better sleep?

It took me a long time to adapt to CPAP. Once I did I really CRAVED sleep. It's as if my body could finally relax and enjoy sleeping after decades of fighting it every night. I couldn't wait to go to bed at night, and didn't want to get up in the morning. It took a while (months) for that to pass.

However, don't overlook the fact that something else may be going on with your health. If you are constantly feeling more tired than usual, it might be time to talk to your doctor and consider something other than your sleep is at issue. That's how I felt when my thyroid hormones were really low.
