I also wonder if taking something that makes you sleepy (like Benadryl) might help?
Worst thing he could do. Diphenhydramine has a half-life of ~9 hours but is highly variable, could be even longer.
It works for me. Wears off in 4-6 hours.

Regardless, anything that helps them fall asleep despite the mask, be it medication or melatonin or chamomile tea or sleep meditations (I like Jason Stephenson on YouTube) might be beneficial.
Not regardless. You have to know what's broken before you can try to fix it.
Freeze this moment a little bit longer.
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.

When my ex started CPAP he had to lie on his back. He was a stomach sleeper and couldn't sleep at all. It was horrible. I really feel for you.
It's a shame your ex didn't find us before he gave up.

Plenty of people have found ways of making stomach sleeping and PAPing work together. My husband is one of them.
That was 10 years ago. Things have really changed since he was using it.

I been on c-pap now for 14 months. I'm also on 2 liter of o2. my doctor looked over my last report. his reply I never saw a report like this. what are you doing. the reports he gets from his other patients. they only have their mask on for less than 4 hours per night. I don't have to see any doctor again till I have problems with the insurance company. you want my help. don't listen to a lot of people. you sleep the way you want to sleep. if you like to sleep on your side. you sleep on your side. I like the air tube on top. I use the F30i. the only mask I have ever used. I use a mask liner for the cushion to give me more comfort. keep your equipment clean. the biggest problem with c-pap. people can't sleep with a mask on their face. its mind set. if you want to help yourself. you will be a success with this problem. most important thing you must do. don't make it harder for self. make life easy for yourself. do you need the humidity and heated hose. its not important. its a luxury idem. its more trouble than what its worth. I don't use it. it took me one month to get use to my mask. my mine was made up. I'm going to stick it out. after 30 days I got use to it. its on my face 7 to 9 hours per night. I do have some problems with it when its hot and humid. but I stick it out. my sleep pattern is the same every night. I think I get about 6 hours of good solid sleep. I have to get up and go to the bathroom 1 to 2 times per night. watch your diet. salt intake is bad. watch your alcohol consumption too. when you go to bed tonight. put on your mask and don't think about it. if you use medication. try not to use it. its destroying your body. you learn to sleep the natural way. I don't believe in sleeping medications. there no good. you can do it. its not hard. its all mind set.

Most over-the-counter sleep medications contain an ingredient called diphenhydramine to help induce sleep. Their relaxation properties can have an adverse effect if you’re suffering from sleep apnea because, along with quieting the mind, they can cause your throat muscles to relax. This is especially problematic if you have the most common type of sleep breathing disorder: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The condition is the result of the throat muscles becoming flaccid while you sleep and partially blocking the airway. The bottom line is that taking a sleeping pill can add to the problem and contribute to your bouts of apnea increasing.'--https://www.columbussleepcenter.com/blo ... -columbus/
The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

To the original poster,

Please don't give up. You are not "stuck" with the mask that they gave you or the pressure settings they they prescribed. Call the doctor that prescribed that pressure and call the DME about a different mask, or even a different mask type.

I also take benadryl - if I don't, I sleep only 4 or less hours. I adapted to cpap very easily- after boot camp 55 years ago, I figure I can do pretty much anything.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I should say that this whole experience started because I told my VA doctor that I never sleep well so a sleep study was set up. It was determined I have moderate apnea if I sleep. My problem(s) are I feel I'm suffocating no matter what setting the machine is on. I cannot get used to the mask on my face. I sleep on my side and can't with the mask on with any comfort. I have had a traumatic nasal injury with two surgeries and only breath 50% each nostril at best. It seems at this point that the further I get behind in sleep the harder it is to use the CPAP. My VA doc is sending me a small supply of hydroxyzine.

I'll bet he ain't a sleep doc, is he.

So you're on an interface that you can't breath through.

I would get the long report of the sleep study to determine exactly what "moderate sleep apnea" you have, as well as seeing if poor sleep is contaminating the study (that's going to be inferred, tho-- not proved).

Need the Oscar report to see if you're leaking like a sieve as well as looking at pressures to insure they're not unnecessarily jacked up.

I'm taking some artistic license here, but IMO your real question goes something like:

"WTF am I doing this for!?"

And I would say at this point, everything's still on the table.

IMO, it is time to either ask for a different mask or a referral to an ENT
for evaluation of your "traumatic nasal injury".
If a surgical correction is indicated---go for it!

No. He set me up with the sleep study clinic.

I don't think another surgery is an option. Too much scarring from two previous surgeries.
