Strange behavior with Aircurve 10 VAuto, noise/won't shut off automatically

Post by palerider » Wed Oct 05, 2022 6:30 am

I changed the filter (using another hypoallergenic thin filter) in my VAuto a couple days ago, and the machine started acting weird.

It wouldn't shut off like it normally would, the fan would run at a lower speed, and I could feel some vibrating in the machine. Additionally, it wouldn't deliver air like normal after it got into that strange new behavior pattern, when I'd inhale, I could feel and hear a vibration in the airflow. A couple times it was making the wheezing noises that so many have complained about.

What I finally figured out is that the new filter was getting sucked down onto the opening, so it was causing a lot more airflow resistance. I popped open the filter cover, while it was acting weird, noticed the filter was sucked into the opening, pulled the filter out, and the airflow picked up to where it always was before when I'd take the mask off, and then smart start shut off the machine, just like it is supposed to do.

playing with it more, I found that if I put the filter in the square opening of the filter cover door, it would get sucked into the intake, If however I sat the filter in the opening of the housing, and then closed the door, it would pinch the bottom edge of the filter in place, and the filter would stay, and the machine would work fine.

I guess pictures are in order.

How I thought I should put in a new filter:

What worked:

There needs to be a little more support around the actual air inlet when using just the thin hypoallergenic filters, but pinching the filter in the bottom of the door seems to be working for the time being :)

There needs to be a little more support around the inner opening,

I have the same machine that you do. I've never had an issue with the filter like you describe. I always place the filter on the door of the compartment when replacing it and have never had an issue.

I read a post about this recently...the hypoallergenic filter getting sucked in. I find my humidifier chamber gets stuck sometimes where I have to yank harder than I'd like to get it out to clean it.

Is the filter OEM, or third party?
I don't know what mine are, but never have that problem.
Knock on wood . . .
A brilliant solution, nonetheless!

Thanks for this, we'll add it to the list of things to check for when noisey or odd behaving machines.

Given the HA filter is thinner, more pliable and less porous it would be more prone to getting sucked in. Well done.

Might be third party. The weird thing is that the previous one from the same package had no problem.

The point, as it were, wasn't that this WOULD happen, but that it *CAN* happen, and if the machine starts making unexpected noises (a complaint that gets heard, no pun intended, check the filter.

thanks for the tip. i don't use hypoallergenic filters and usually put the filter against the port.

so far so good.

now, if i can just remember the tip to pass on when someone complains of noise.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

PR:

I thought that you were once in the double-filtering camp.

No longer so?

I usually do, but didn't have a coarse filter handy the last two times I changed.

I would make a joke about filtering out coarseness, but I'm no longer paid by the joke here.

I was told this year's entire budget went toward finding Zonker some new gifs.

StarKist doesn't want frogs with good taste . . .

All in all, a very helpful thread on possible problems with filters.

In my case, I never change them often enough.

Something else I'm waay too lazy to put a reminder for inside my phone's calendar.

My strategy is my spiral notebook.
I draw up a manual spreadsheet, with 21 lines for 21 days. (fits the page)
Day of week/month is followed by hours, AHI, pressure, leak, CI, and a few others,
as requested by my doctor.
At the end of each page, I swap pillows and filters.
Medicare allows for 2 a month, so I am a bit ahead.
Good for when I run out of credit--already out of money . . .
