Hurricane Ian

Post by LSAT » Wed Sep 28, 2022 9:58 am

There are about 25 million people living in Florida...How many hundreds of thousand CPAP machines will be destroyed by Ian this week?

I imagine there will be a few, but if you left the area they took them with them. On a side note if you have an electric car and going to evacuate and your battery goes dead in traffic on I95 or I75 your up that well know creek.

I feel sure Fox News has their reporters desperately looking for one stalled EV so they can feed stupid crap to their viewers.

Yup. And they will walk right past the stalled gasless SUVs and pickup trucks.

all this reminds me that I want to get it back up electric system for my CPAP.

I drive a hybrid just so both sides can have a good reason to hate me.

Thing of it is, unless you are using the accessories hard, that electric vehicle will be conserving power in stop and go traffic when it shuts off.

I wish hybrids and EVs were more affordable.

I wish ANY car was affordable now. Dealerships don't seem like they even want to sell cars at this point.

Although maybe there will be some odd deals on used ones soon, once the water-damaged ones from Florida have all evidence of flooding removed.

Much like rice-filled, nightstand-diving CPAPs.

Brilliant!
The bullfrog ran out of gas for the first time ever in our 13 year old Prius.
We were so distracted with my back surgery . . .
We were stalled at a very busy intersection until our son could bring a gas can.
Hubby stood behind the car waving people over to the other turn lane until
one good guy helped hand push us into a turn out.
The incline at that location helped, but not enough.
4 pm--most people are too busy--but one guy was not.
Then he cut out like the Lone Ranger. Gotta make you smile.

Oh dear.

But this.

https://www.abcactionnews.com/simplemos ... lectricity

This is at least doable. In an emergency situation.
Florida's electric grid is going down, for days if not weeks.

I live in an area where if you do not have a fossil fuel vehicle, you are not going very far.
And get back.

Technically if you look at the dirty details an EV is in reality a fossil fuel vehicle and may be questionable as to how clean it really is. Generation, transmission, and distribution all have losses, so a portion of the original energy for electricity production goes to waste by the time it reaches its destination. Combined with manufacturing and disposing/recycling of EV batteries, it's an environmental disaster.

This is from 2021, but 2022 is likely little different. Bear in mind this is electricity produced within a state and does reflect what the state may import from other states on transmission systems. I'm a bit surprised Florida still has coal in the mix.

Having worked most my career in a power utility I am of the opinion that the states should be looking at permitting and construction of new nuke plants and gas fired generation. I can not see renewables replacing fossil or nuke fuels and to do so would require massive amounts of acreage for both solar and wind. Supplement maybe. Mandating EV vehicle sales will only exacerbate the need for fossil and nuke generation. Solar is like a magic fairy dust sprinkled on power lines that may make some 'elusive' investors some cash, but create a financial burden on most.

At least I mentioned CPAP.

Let's consider that progress.

I am looking to buy/create a battery backup setup that can be expanded. I plan to use lithium iron phosphate which is more friendly than most wrt environment.

I don’t disagree regarding nuclear.
