Resmed Airsense 11 and dry mouth

Post by Spaceentity » Sun Sep 25, 2022 2:12 pm

I've been using the Resmed Airsense 11 for about 9 months now and I continue to have a problem with dry mouth. The AutoClimate Control setting doesn't take care of this problem. When I set the humidity level at # 5 and hose temp at 78F, still have a problem, even when I set the humidity lever at #6 and hose temp to 86F, this tends to help about 50% of the time. BUT, my other problem is that I can only go about 6 hours without "raining" or "gurgling & popping" in my hose/face make, or water dripping down the inside of the hose and into the mask, causing me to get up and shake out the water before going back to bed. I know this varies to the ambient temperature but I keep my home temperature down in in Central Florida at 78F and humidity at 50% at night. It gets much worse during the winter when I keep the home thermostat set at 72F. FYI: I use the F&P Vitera full face mask.

What are my solutions to prevent the "Rain-out" ?

Have you located the machine somewhere lower than your head? Water will run back to it instead of into your mask. You can also get a hose cosy (warm covering) for the hose to help with condensation, but it could be counterproductive if you don't need cooler air.

see posts #3 and 4 here for various options on preventing condensation in the mask/hose....commonly called rain out.
http://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t9403 ... -road.html

When someone already has a heated hose this is when I say to "crank up the hose air temp" and see if that is enough to prevent the condensation.
Sometimes even the max of 86 degrees isn't enough....been there and done that myself.
If/when that doesn't work then we start looking at changing either the humidity setting or last resort change the ambient room temp.

Using a hose cozy over the heated hose doesn't/won't make it change the hose air temp from what you have set it to. If you set it to 82 degrees then that's what it will give you with or without a hose cozy.
It just probably won't use quite as much electricity maintaining that temp. It can't make the air warmer in the heated hose.
Now if someone has a mask short hose as well and that hose is of course unheated then using a hose cozy on the short mask hose might actually help keep the air coming from the heated hose warmer longer so it could maybe be warm enough to not cool down and release the mositure.
I am not familiar with your stated mask so I don't know if that would help or not.

My own preferred mask has a short hose and I have put a padacheek short hose cozy on it and it has helped quite a bit.....and it lets me use a little less than 86 degrees and prevents the condensation. While that 86 degrees feels good in the winter it doesn't feel so great right now so I try to get by with a little less heat whenever and however I can.
My nose doesn't like it if I try to reduce the humidity setting though.....so that isn't an option for me. I actually prefer the max setting of 8 on my ResMed. I can get by with 6 setting but I usually end up with a goodly number of sneezes the next day to annoy me.
Set at 8 humidity setting I don't get the sneezes but it sure makes it hard to prevent the rain out.

Your dry mouth issues....may or may not be fixed if you could use more humidity without fighting the rain out.
Worth trying though.
To stand any chance of it helping you will have to probably max the setting and that starts the rain out battle....but it can be won.

Any chance the dry mouth is caused by mouth leaking and not just insufficiently moist air? Leaking air through your mouth will dry you out fast.

I believe my dry mouth is caused by the mouth popping open during sleep -- and the humidity setting and temp setting does not cure the mouth opening or adequately compensate for it. In my case, taping was the answer. I have found silicone tape to be very effective and much less painful to remove than cloth-based tape or paper tape. Something to consider.
