CPAP for hypopneas?

Post by Oday03274 » Wed Aug 17, 2022 10:35 am

HI all, so I have an AHI of 17, but basically no apneas just hypopneas and the majority of them during REM sleep. Does anyone have a similar sleep study profile and has CPAP helped you much?
Also, what is "normal" number of arousals? MY sleep study showed an average of 32 per hour.

Info on me...I'm 47, male, BMI of 20. I was first diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea 10 years ago but wasn't able to get the CPAP to work for me and then lost my insurance for number of years. Hopefully second time is a charm.

Thanks for taking time to read my post!
Patrick

yes, cpap can and does help with hypopneas. remember that cpap is there to help keep the airway open. if the airway can be opened enough and gently enough, it will treat your hypopneas. you may have to tweek the pressures a bit on the machine, but it should work.

good luck!

eta: this assumes you are getting an AUTO cpap not fixed pressure.

but that's enough about them.

It is my understanding that they do in fact have me set up for fixed pressure of 6cm and c-flex of 3...Do you think this is a poor prescription?

yes. they are likely trying to sell you a basic cpap instead of an auto cpap.

do you know the EXACT model they want to prescribe? all of the model name, if you can, please. it will tell us what type of machine they are directing you towards.

When most of your events are hypopneas AND you are a back sleeper, you can often make a big difference - if not all - by training yourself to side- or front sleep.

It is my understanding, that they have the Airsense 10 "CPAP" (CPAP being the model vs elite, autoset etc) available, if I want any other model (the 11 for example) the wait is "uncertain" I have asked for a copy of my prescription to see what it actually says but haven't gotten that yet.

HI Julie, I do try and sleep on my side, even have tried pretty much every method and tool to do so but I often end up on my back anyways even though any time I'm "awake" I shift to my side.

The Airsense 10 CPAP model...is a "brick". It supplies no data so you can monitor your therapy. The ELITE offers data but is strictly a Fixed Pressure machine. Go for the Autoset. It offersFixed or Variable pressures. The AS10 and AS 11 have very similar features. Take whichever is available.

Hypopnias are treated exactly the same as Apneas.

Yes. 1, c-flex means they want to give you one of the junker philips machines.

second, 6 is probably too low.

DO NOT GET A CPAP. it has no data. Go for an autoset.

Also, Resmeds don't have "C-FLEX".

I'm not understanding.... if the hypopnea is not caused by a partial obstruction, by rather caused by less effort to expand the chest, how does a pressure increase help?
(Considering the fact that the pressures utilized by PAP are insufficient to inflate a toy balloon)

I don't know where you got the idea that hypopneas were NOT caused by partial obstructions, because they are. Airway blockage of 40-70% is a hypopnia. Airway blockage of 70-100% is an apnea. Both are treated by CPAP pressure.
