CPAP add-on Covid filter?
CPAP add-on Covid filter?
Anyone know of any CPAP add-on Covid filter?
I found this article from 2 years ago, but it only talks about filtering exhaled air. I’m more interested in filtering inhaled air. After all if I can avoid inhaling Covid in the first place, I won’t be exhaling virus particles to start with.
https://web.archive.org/web/20200427222 ... ctor-warns
Long story, but I’m taking my daughter to a convention she wants to attend, and we’re sharing a double room. While she’s out there contracting Covid, I don’t want her to exhale it and me to inhale it while we’re asleep.
I guess it would take a few days for her to become contagious, so maybe I’ll dodge any bullet, but I’m still wondering why I couldn’t find any solution, or much discussion, here, or on the internet.
Maybe I can strap an N95 mask over the air intake on my Resmed…

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
The N95 over the intake sounds like a bad idea.
I would suggest you wear a mask while awake--everywhere, and
put an AB filter inline with your hose--changing the AB setting to the ON position.
This way your cpap can compensate for the additional resistance of the filter.
Still not 100%, but it can't hurt.

Why would it take a few days for her to become contagious? But is she not going to wear a mask out there?

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
Restricting the input or the output of the cpap in any way is a bad idea.
When covid started some were using an Anti-bacterial filter in the hose to which the mfgs promptly rejected as that also reduces the effective pressure at the mask. And when using a humidifier gets even more restrictive.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
The Resmed Autosets have a SETTING that compensates for the AB filter.
Other machines may not--but Resmed does.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
Thanks guys. I think I found the filter https://ap.resmed.com/knowledge/what-is ... irsense-10 Now I wonder if that is N95. Seems like it exceeds N95. https://shop.pall.com/us/en/products/zidBB50T I think however this will only filter inhaled air, but in my situation that’s more important.
$11.95 (free shipping) at https://iremedy.com/ for 1. Or about $350 for a case of 50, since they’re only supposed to be used for 48 hours (of run time I suppose).
To answer the other question, yeah my daughter will wear a mask at her convention. But its still possible she could contract Covid. N95 just filters 95% of particles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N95_respirator …given enough time the 5% could get through. If that happens, how long until she starts exhaling viruses. https://www.webmd.com/lung/coronavirus- ... n-period#1 says On average, symptoms showed up in the newly infected person about 5.6 days after contact. Rarely, symptoms appeared as soon as 2 days after exposure.

The timeframe of symptoms showing up have nothing to do with the timeframe of being contagious.thx1138 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 10:43 am

But, I'm having trouble with how deeply you're concerned about catching COVID from your daughter, but absolutely don't give a crap about transmission from you to your daughter.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
N95 doesn't mean what you seem to think it means.thx1138 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 10:43 amN95 just filters 95% of particles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N95_respirator …given enough time the 5% could get through.
N95 means it filters 95% of 0.3um particulate or larger, Viruses are smaller than that, so if
....she starts exhaling viruses.
That said, regardless of the people who said using a N95 or HE mask over the inlet of your machine being a bad idea, over the last few years people have repeatedly reported great success doing exactly that when there was a lot of wildfire smoke in the area.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
1. Fact check: No, N95 filters are not too large to stop COVID-19 particles https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/fac ... 343537002/
2. My daughter is going to the convention and will much more exposed. I’m just going to sit in the hotel and watch TV. I’m far less likely to contract Covid, and subsequently, far less likely to spread it.
3. I did ask for a way to filter the exhale, but so far we’ve only found a way to filter the inhale. The Yale MD in my first post also wanted a way to filter the exhale. But 2 years later we don’t have it AFAIK, though it would be great to find one. All I can think of is to put an N95 mask over my CPAP mask…

I have one in each room at my office.
I know viruses are much smaller but droplets are larger and covid doesn’t float around on its own.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
This is quite true--lots of mucus and other wet stuff mixed with viruses.lynninnj wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 7:19 pmhttps://www.amazon.com/Purifier-HEPASil ... ljaz10cnVl

Those particles are fairly large.

Re: CPAP add-on Covid filter?
Before your trip you might want to get just one of those filters to try at home to see how well YOU can sleep with it. Just a thought.thx1138 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 10:43 am$11.95 (free shipping) at https://iremedy.com/ for 1. Good yeah I got one filter on order. To test it out and to find the Resmed setting. Held off on the 50-pack.
Everyone’s all vaxxed up. Not sure those vaxxes are very useful against the new dominant strains they’re finding in sewage samples and at large. There may be newer vaccines in the fall.
