Prepping for the next outage

Post by lynninnj » Thu Jul 28, 2022 4:11 pm

I have been reading along to a bunch of posts about people traveling and making battery packs to go camping etc. etc.

Where I live we have a pellet stove. We bought a battery back up that will allow it to shut down and prevent smoke for filling the house when the power goes out. Doesn’t last super long but it does give it time to kind of wind down.

I thought about getting something like this to use as a back up in case the power goes out again and I need a separate one for my CPAP machine.

Can any of you electronic loving people look at the specs and give me some kind of clue as to whether this would serve my purpose? And if so roughly how much time I could expect to get from it?

I’m usually pretty good at math but I’m not familiar with a lot of the specs related to the resmed air sense 11. I didn’t do well in physics class.

Thanks for any help any of you are willing to provide.

That is the one we have. They make other products to and are listed on the website.

These are a little fancier at around $300.

My ultimate goal is to invest in a nice GoalZero set with solar hookup.

A bit pricey but probably worth it.

PG&E has offered us a free rechargeable battery because of need for cpap and oxygen. I will find out which of the several models of Goal Zero Yeti battety is involved and will post here.

Thanks.

We have jcpl here. Might be worth looking into.

After digging around some more I was half tempted to ask the administrator to remove my post because I saw there was a whole other thread along these lines.

I really want to apologize.

If you would please private message me whenever you learn. Thank you.

The unit is Goal One Yeti 6000x power station, which costs $6,000 at Amazon. This was selected because it has capacity to run a stationery oxygen concentrator plus two CPAP nachines. A smaller one would seem to be adequate for just one machine but i am not expert. May i suggest checking with your utility company.

I have one of these I bought for a different reason, but it will power my CPAP with the humidifier turned off for a good while. Do a search in the questions for 'CPAP'. Actually ran my pellet stove for a short while during outage with it.

No need to remove the post or even stop posting here.
I would bet my last dollar another one will pop up within a week.

A few years ago hubby added a gas powered whole house generator. We used it the first time last week with a 3 plus hour outage in the middle of the day when it was 100 degrees outside. Kept the air conditioner running which was all I cared about.

Thanks to all of you for the input.

I have seen other posters talking about these little portable CPAP machines which I can’t afford right now.

What I am wondering is there any adapters out there to make it work more efficiently or allow you to attach it via USB-a or Usb-c?

This thing is supposed to be pretty handy as far as able to handle different sources of power. But I don’t know how it does with direct current instead of alternating current.

I don’t think I will be able to convince our local power company to get a $6000 battery. :-) It’s a nice thought though.

Probably not.
My power company said that since I use a medical device that requires electricity that they would move me to the top of the list for being one of the first to be alerted to a planned outage. WOW...big whoopie.

Don't forget that if you get a battery since you are using a ResMed machine it runs on 24 volts and most batteries give out 12 volts so you will need the ResMed converter first.

This one is for the AirSense/AirCurve 10 model line. I mention it because for the AirSense 11 model line a similar product is also needed but is NOT yet available. I don't remember which model you have but if it is the AirSense 11 model you will need one of these but specific to the AirSense 11 model.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/c-100- ... -converter

If it were me I would get one of those scooter deep cycle batteries and the converter and just use that.
Maybe get other adapters to charge phone, laptop, etc. That would be the cheapest option I would think.

Well… at leayou have THAT going for you. jk

Pugsy- Thanks!

I know you say big whoop but part of the reason I am asking in the first place is because there is only two homes at the end of our powerlines. We are LAST on the list.

We have had to stay in hotel rooms in the past because of the cold.

I’m really trying to scam here and figure out a way to get by. I saw they had some thing available at Costco but I don’t know how it compares price wise. It is my understanding that the adapter for the 11 is not out yet but I will be keeping an eye on that.

I have no clue how it works.

It's a big whoopie because I am only on the list to get NOTIFIED about a planned outage and those only happen during the day. There is no "fix it first" list at all. They don't do that at all.
And I know that when it comes to fixing a problem that it doesn't mean squat for an accidental outage.

But do you know how many time we have had a PLANNED outage where I live? Once in 13 years (about 8 years ago) and that was for only a couple of hours in the morning. They did call me...but I couldn't understand a word that the recording said except the name of our Electric company so I had to call the electric company and ask what the message was.
Idiots...just plain idiots.

I wish you luck. I don't do specific battery help. My eyes glaze over when we start talking about batteries and/or electricity.
I know I need that converter and a deep cycle battery and 35 amps would probably be big enough..... and a man with strong arms...that's the extent of it.
I have the man with the strong arms but he is an over the road truck driver so hit or miss if he would be home....and don't have the other 2 items. Don't go camping anymore either.
Hubby did the generator (electric start) for when he wasn't home in case we had a prolonged outage.
I am still waiting but it's there if I need it and can remember all the steps to fire it up.

If worst came to worst and I had nothing....sleeping upright in hubby's recliner would get me through it short term.
Long term I could go somewhere with power and spend the night.

I found out the hard way that UPS's like you listed above beep every few min when the power goes off there is no sleeping with it. Souther doc assures me there is a way to shut the beep off but I haven't found it. I gave up and bought the dc cord and now plug right into my husbands scooter batteries. Also have an rv and can plug into that as well.

The outage is here. Lost power for a while but many storms in the area. Several trees down in the drive next to the power lines.

Was talking on wilderness thread but Rob suggested posting it here. Maybe someone has insight.

FYI there is no adapter yet for AS 11. I know I wont get far but this is all I have right now and my biggest concern is NOT damaging my device.

copied from other post:

I have 2 mostly fully topped off Halo Bolt car jumpstarter/chargers about the size of a vcr tape. https://www.qvc.com/footers/el/pdf/E229 ... ctions.pdf They have a regular power plug in them and it says 65w max output. The AS11 is 65w I believe. 5Ah and 14v.

So....if I turn off the heater and humidifier, maybe just maybe I can get thru one night without power with those babies?
