Newbie

Post by DebbyP » Sat Jul 23, 2022 4:35 am

Hello - I am so glad that I found this site. I have been on my Cpap machine since the beginning of May. I did have an issure at the beginning with getting the right mask and after about a month I finally feel that the mask that I am now using is right for me. I still wake up tired and by the afternoon I can not keep my eyes open and need to take a nap. How long does it take for me to start feeling better? I am ready to give up with this Cpap. Thank you for your input.

Hi Debby, welcome to the forum. Can I suggest you have a look at the thread titled "Sticky: Newbies PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING". It will tell you the type of information we need to be able to help you. Here is a link to that thread: viewtopic/t172378/Sticky--Newbies-PLEAS ... 003645be83

It can take some time to fully accommodate yourself to CPAP treatment - after all you're learning to breathe in a whole new way with a plastic alien strapped to your face and a compressor blowing air up your nose! :shock: But it can be done and it will pay dividends for your health over all the years ahead. So please share some details about:
  1. your diagnostic sleep test (in particular the AHI and breakdown of obstructive, central apnea and hypopnea)
  2. Which machine you're using (exact make AND MODEL)
  3. Which mask you're using
  4. What AHI you're achieving with the machine
  5. Any other factors affecting your sleep
It would be really helpful if you can provide an Oscar chart to show in detail what's happening. Oscar is free software - the link is in my signature below.
* Download Oscar
* Oscar help
* An alternative to Oscar - try SleepHQ

I have no medical training or qualifications. Take my advice for what it's worth.

In addition to what Respirator99 has said or asked.

How many hours of sleep are you getting?
Are those hours fragmented with a lot of wake ups?
Do you take any medications of any kind (even OTC)..if so, what?
What kind of sleep study did you have? Home sleep study or a sleep study done with techs in attendance?
Did you have a sleep study using cpap and wearing a mask to figure out optimal pressure or were you given a machine
that would auto adjust and let the machine try to sort out the pressure needs? Do you know?

welcome to the zoo!

i concur with respirator and pugsy.

i also want to add that each of us is different. our sleep needs are different. we are different ages. different weight. different sex. it all adds up to YOUR sleep apnea journey being unique. and that's why you are being asked the questions and urged to get the sleep tracking software called oscar.

all of this will help the experts here to see what can be done to help you. once you display your oscar charts here (right HERE, in this thread.) folks can make some helpful suggestions.

as to how long does it take? that's a very individual thing as well. it usually doesn't happen all at once. mostly it's a gradual improvement sort of thing.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.
