Typical Time in Large Leak??

Post by PEDMJR » Wed Jul 20, 2022 11:07 am

I've been using CPAP for 6 years, but I'm new to the forum and just discovered OSCAR. I was looking at the %time in large leak and just wondering what is typical? I typically score in the high 90s on the resmed app, but any deductions are typically for leak. Thanks

ResMed won't give you a Mr Frowny face for leak management until you spend 30% or more of the night in large leak...that's a lot of time in large leak.

Me personally....I look at how bad the large leak was (how deep into large leak I went) as well as duration of large leak overall. 15 % of the night spent at max large leak at 28 L/min isn't very deep into large leak and I don't worry about it at all.
15 % of the night spent up around 40 L/min I would start worrying about.

So I look at how much time was spent above 30L/min and not the 24 L/min that is ResMed's large leak territory line in the sand.

Now any leak that wakes a person up often is unwanted no matter how big or little because it is disturbing sleep itself.

My own personal line in the sand is 15 % or more time spent in large leak that is in excess of 30 L/min. I kinda toss ResMed's 24 L/min line in the sand out the window.

I think most users have some occasional leaks, but, not necessarily large leaks. I very seldom have any leaks and never any large leaks. Too many large leaks may indicate mouth breathing.

Large leaks can also simply be mask movement.
I know because I had it happen to me.
Was trying a new mask (under the nose cushion) a while back and I was have LOTS of big leaks. Now we all know that I gave up worrying about taping my mouth shut years ago so when I looked at the leak graph I saw the big leaks but since they didn't wake me up I really had zero idea where the leak was coming from.

So I did what I tell other people to do....I taped my mouth shut and made sure the tape wouldn't come off so that I could figure out exactly where the leaks were coming from. Next day I looked at the leak graph and it was still really ugly. Tape was secure over mouth.....only place the leak could be coming from was mask movement and it was moving a lot from what I saw.

So we can't always blame mouth breathing for large leaks and nasal masks.
You can't tell just by looking at the leak line and think "Oh,...nasal mask so it must be mouth breathing" without first making sure the lips are sealed and then look at the leak line. There is simply no other way to know for sure.

Here's a known mouth breathing leak BTW....I know because I woke up mouth breathing one morning and decided to continue the mouth breathing so I could see exactly how big the mouth breathing might cause a leak.
The known mouth breathing time is at the end of the night and I circled it in red...
Big surprise people....if you didn't know that tiny amount of leak was mouth breathing you would never have thought it.
Don't ask me what the other more significant leaks were from...don't know, don't care, didn't wake me up.
