--Latest Update: Adventures in used machine browsing--

Took Okie's suggestion to look at fb marketplace for machines. They're averaging about $200-300 less than the craigslist postings for the same models. (Resmed 10 Autoset on fb is about $400-500) I went through and bookmarked ones that seemed like a good price (ie: not super high compared with all the rest). Made sure they were all Autoset machines (my prescription is for APAP) and that they had humidifiers. Noticed one that was being sold with a Soclean machine, and felt like I'd read something about those being bad, so I ran a check for "Soclean" here in the forums and confirmed that I didn't want anything that had been cleaned with one.

I ended up with a short list of questions that I sent to several sellers, after confirming from the photos/descriptions that they come with all the right parts. Key questions were:

What have you used to clean it?
Is it from a non-smoking residence?
Do you know how many hours of run time it has currently?

I've gotten responses from 2 sellers, one of them local. The local one has only used the machine about 50 hours, as they apparently needed something different. The only thing it needs and doesn't come with is a mask, which makes sense, and I'm thinking of going with that one, for $400.

Does that sound like a reasonable price? Is there anything else I should be asking?
You can still use the supplier for masks if you wish or maybe I might have something you could work with and it not cost you anything. I have a "donations" box where people might try a mask and it not work...so they send it to me and I find a new home for it. These are totally free.

I also have a small selection of masks that I purchased that I can sell well below retail price.
But I usually tell people to use their insurance if they can and/or maybe try something from the donations box at least until they figure out what the like before they go buying anything on their own.
I think I'd like to try out some things from your box o' masks, Pugsy. How do I go about that?

Haven't read every word of this thread, but there's a place that has used CPAP machines that cleans them up and resells them: secondwindcpap.com. Got a backup ResMed S9 Autoset from them a long time ago, and found their prices pretty fair for used CPAP's. They also give you a warranty. I feel more comfortable going there rather than Craig's List or Facebook Marketplace, at least partly because of the warranty and having someone behind the sale rather than a random individual.

In any case, hope that you find what you're looking for...getting a reliable CPAP that will give you sleep data is really important to get your therapy going in the right direction. Good luck!

Extremely fair price for a low hour AirSen10 AutoSet.
Only other question I might ask if they had pets in their homes or not and then only if I was extremely allergic to pet dander.
I would hop on that one for sure.

We do this via PMs in terms of any personal information.
Tell me...do you normally breathe through your nose during the day and night just fine?
Or do you have nasal congestion issues that cause you to mouth breathe a lot? I always suggest some sort of nasal mask to start with unless the person simply can't breathe only through their nose.
Nasal masks just are less obtrusive and easier to keep sealed than full face masks are. Less surface area touching the skin.
Also...my supply of full face masks is really limited anyway. People aren't donating as much lately since cpap.com changed to a 30 day return policy for their masks. People are now returning their masks for a refund instead of donating.

I have some allergy congestion, but normally not enough to cause any breathing issues... just sniffling occasionally.

Okay....no significant nasal congestion issues at this time.
We will look at nasal masks of some sort first.

Let me check to see what is in the donations box and get back with you.

you might want that seller to post a picture showing the run time hours. this is something that would show up on the screen and they can post a pic of that.

or just be sure you plug in the machine when you pick it up to be sure the run hours are correct.

in the meantime, i want to congratulate you on your no nonsense approach to this.

good luck!

Turns out it has about 950 hours, which still seemed quite acceptable to me for the price.

I'm also really glad I was asking the sellers about cleaning methods, because one of them with very few hours was using "soclean 2 and alcohol"

I now have a machine, with everything included except the mask and an SD card (which I'll need to snag a reader for as well).

I'm considering naming my machine... the same way people give names to their cars, houseplants, or computers, with the logic that it will make it seem more familiar/friendly.

Suspicious look

I sense a disturbance in the Force... as if I've just wandered into the crossfire of a sibling rivalry or similar. I'm not gonna touch that.
