You have no idea how long I have been preaching that "#s don't always tell you the truth" thing to Zonker.
I think probably one of the hardest lessons for him to have to learn. I really wish it were that easy but it's just not.
Numbers are a nice guideline but they are far from the end all be all thing that people tend to think they are.

My best day ever in terms of how I slept and felt was years ago and I woke up to an AHI of 9.4.
I will tell you right now that if I could duplicate how I felt with that AHI I would happily take an AHI of 9.4 every single day of the week.

Numbers will lie to you but your body will always tell you the truth....you may not like what it tells you but it will be the truth.

Doesn't that just frost your you know whats?
Been there and done that with the AHI 0.0 and was so disappointed when I wasn't superwoman with tons of energy.
It's just not fair.
i THINK i've told this story before. my wife and i went to visit our niece in mesa arizona.(think phoenix as it's as near as dammit.) strange bed, strange house and stiflingly hot! tried my best to get comfortable, but nothing really worked. i was both cooking and tossing all night. i swear i didn't sleep a WINK. just a sort a state of staring at the inner side of my eyelids. didn't have a laptop with me.

when i got home found out i had 0 ahi that night!

Feeling bummed. In a foul mood this morning. Sad. Back on thinking I have Narcolepsy. The last 2 hours of my sleep felt like Endless REM. When I would wake up I was so groggy. When I would fall asleep, straight back to REM. Woke up with heart palpitations too. I believe the test for Narcolepsy, the MSLT, shows how fast you fall asleep and go int REM after a night sleep session.

It feels like I didn’t even sleep.

Yesterday I woke up fairly rested. and ready to go. Today. Groggy. 9:31 in bed.

Things felt let like were going a lot better. I was feeling like CPAP was a game changer. Now It feels like a devastating let down. It feels like it never happened. Since Sunday I have been more tired. It felt like a week and a half or so of good days.

here is my data (I've noticed it has stopped recording full data for some reason. SD card is always in: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v4slbu7w5c5t ... 3AXDa?dl=0

You are letting your brain screw with you again.

How do you know you were "right back into REM"?? Because you remember dreaming??? Did you know that we can dream in any sleep stage and it's not limited to just REM?

If you aren't getting detailed data the SD card isn't in correctly or completely. It may appear to be inserted properly but it isn't.

Take the SD card out and then put it back in and watch for the machine to recognize the card. Then you know it is inserted completely.
If you don't get detail after that and you know it was inserted correctly we have a different discussion.

I just re-inserted the card, and saw the message that it was reading it. I put it in day and every night and I hear the click. But I suppose it is possible that I didn't push it all the way. I guess what I'm explaining as far as the REM sleep is concerned, is I have these and less vivid dreams that feel very real to me, and then I will wake up, and then fall back asleep and go right back to the same dream. After I wake up from that I'm extremely groggy. My head feels heavy, and my body feels so exhausted like in a fog.

It felt like the first week and a half or so I felt significant improvement. It was a miracle to me. The last few days have been OK, but I remember a few days last week where I felt fully satisfied with my energy levels and like the old Billy was back.

I suppose it's possible that I have both narcolepsy and sleep apnea. And now that the sleep apnea is being treated things are getting better. But it's possible something else is going on. Or it's possible it's just sleep apnea and I'm not being patient enough. I woke up this morning and felt so awful I burst into tears. It felt like my miracle was gone. It just made me so sad because I had started telling everyone how much better I felt and I feel like I'm going to be a letdown now. I feel like a fraud. I had made plans to play golf with a friend on Saturday. I am almost out of the mind of canceling now. I'm afraid that I'm going backwards again and that I'm going to be the same tired, uninvolved person that recedes from life. I feel irritable and angry and bitter. I hate that. That had almost all resolved for me.

I really had felt like it was a miracle, and now I feel like it's all gone and I imagined it. Of course intellectually I know that's not how things work. I just don't know what happened. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I feel like I wear the hose, I go to sleep, and I wake up and the numbers look good. So I don't understand why I'm suddenly feeling bad again.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe I'm waking up a lot and I don't know it. I've developed a spot under my nose that scabs over, and then opens up every night and bleeds because of the mask. I have tried putting gauze between it and the mask. I may be waking up a lot because of the pain of it.

I also ate a lot of junk food yesterday. I don’t see how that can make me feel this horrible. But I guess it could. Maybe I’m naive. I think anytime I feel bad my first thought is narcolepsy.

I don’t really know how to disprove if I have it or not. I meet with my doctor next August 25. I’ve sent her a message today. At that point I may get additional testing. But from my understanding. With the MSLT. You could have narcolepsy and you get a false positive or a false negative. It’s not really like a blood test. Just a thought that I have narcolepsy I think it’s insanely damaging to my brain. It makes me feel like I’m broken. I don’t know how to get past that. I’ve been trying to work on it in therapy.

:(
That sounds terrible.
It can definitely wake you up, disrupt your sleep, make you feel miserable all day long.

You have to find a way of letting the wound heal. Using CPAP to help you sleep is not about "grin and bear it". It's about finding all the solutions possible to make sure you're sleeping well. The CPAP pressure is there to keep you airway from collapsing. But the contraption should not wound you, hurt you, disturb your sleep.

Many of us had to try many things till we found masks we could sleep with comfortably.

Isn't it about time you added your machine and mask to your profile?

We may come up with tips for your specific mask, or tips for alternative masks.

I have done the same thing but don't always pay close enough attention to any messages I should see when I insert the card and I don't realize that it didn't get completely inserted until I download the data and I got a bunch of blank dates for detailed graphs.
Once I didn't download for a while and I ended up with 3 weeks of blank graphs.

We all do it and it's common and we just shrug our shoulders and move on.

It is real easy when we insert the card to add just a tiny bit of extra pressure and when we do that the SD card will back out just a little. Especially when we are sort of frustrated or in a hurry.

Well, that is just too damn logical for me! :D

When you put it that way, that makes sense. Just because my #'s are good, doesn't exclude poor sleep from other (obvious, like the wound) reasons. Good call, and thank you. I started with the small nose attachment, I have moved up to the medium. Maybe I will try the large tonight. Other than that, I suppose I would have to try a full face mask (i updated my profile, thank you!).

Also this was the message between me and my doctor this morning:

ME:
Hi Dr G,

I've been using the CPAP for almost 2 weeks now. Some days I would have what I would describe as a very significant improvement. I wake up feeling somewhat rested, and after an hour or two when the sleep inertia wears off I have good energy and mood during the day. It's a definite improvement most days.

Somedays, however, despite the numbers, I feel groggy when I wake up and still tired and like I need a nap sometimes during the day.

Other benefits I'm seeing our lower blood pressure, and my stomach issues have improved. I am very grateful for this.

I notice, still, sometimes though that I will wake up early in the morning and fall back to sleep and go straight into REM sleep and feel like it is an endless sea of dreams. And then when I wake up I am groggy. And days, especially after some intense exercise or long hikes, I have muscle soreness and weakness that takes a few days to resolve. This has been the case for many years.

Some days I feel like it's almost 100% improvement, and other days I feel like I am still very tired.

I had no expectations going into this, so I am encouraged by some of the improvement, but still wondering about the other stuff and if it is in any way indicative of other sleep disorders.

Thank you and looking forward to our Aug 25th appt.
DOCTOR:
Mr...,

Overall it seems like there is some improvement. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to get the full benefit and get used to the CPAP. Give it time. Overall there is an improvement from where you were before you started CPAP.
