Allergies/Sinusitis, sleep difficulty and fatigue

Post by Architect » Mon Jun 27, 2022 3:52 pm

Hi, since I developed sinusitis disorder 3 years ago, I have done alot of research as to why? my pap therapy data is outstanding, but during sinus congestion, AHI goes up 1-3,. I sleep horrible/feel fatigued. Congestion arouses me or wakes me up. Which tells me, I sleep with my mouth closed, trying to breathe through my nose.

I have non allergic rhinitis. Although I have allergy symptoms, specially sneezing, congestion, yearly conjunctivitis, I don't have allergies, cause is unknown.

I don't know if I can post up bunch of articles here, articles are from ENT centers. I thought this one was very interesting, would like to share with those battling allergies/sinusitis/sleep apnea.

Going to share with my sleep clinic to.

Individual can read entire article or just scroll down to Night symptoms causing lack of sleep or allergies can worsen sleep apnea. Wow ! that is a long link.....

https://www.advancedentdenver.com/blog/ ... 20symptoms.

All the ENT centers, I find are thousands of miles away

Poor sleep from ANY reason is going to make anyone's fatigue worse.
As far as your AHI increasing when the congestion is worse....any chance those are arousal related flags and not asleep flags?
When we don't sleep so great from congestion we typically have a lot of arousals that we may or may not remember.
The AHI wouldn't bother me so much as the crappy sleep would bother me. The arousals will just kill your sleep architecture and set you up for feeling like crap because you slept like crap.

Non allergic rhinitis is a tough one because we don't know what the triggers are and like I always say....gotta figure out the cause of the problem first before we can fix the problem.

Hi friend, thanks for sharing. 3 years ago, I developed sinusitis, which progressively gotten worse, have no idea the cause. I only sneeze in one room in my home, computer room. Room I smoke the most. I have Holmes air purifier and essential oil diffuser on desk. Steam clean carpet, and still sneeze. I stopped smoking in computer room for a week and still sneezed.

I shared with allergist, dust makes me sneeze, he shared I don't have dust allergies. I live in dust bowl of Tx. I don't have allergies, but Tx is rated #1 worst allergy state.

I get alot of viral/bacterial sinus infections , which causes my body to become super hot, but no fever, waking me up. Forgot what dr called it, something like, internal fever. States sinusitis can cause.

Reason, I pinpoint sinusitis is, for years I rarely had any sleep issues, till the sneezing began 3 years ago. 4 sinus CT scans - normal past 3 years.

But, on Jun 4th, 2022, CT scan revealed left sinus inflammation. May 9th, had lung infection, possible pnemonia, then cleared of pneumonia, after blood cultures. Appt scheduled for ENT. Geez, it's a long wait.

I've been Covid tested 12 times  I kid you not. Always negative. All 12 times, Sinuses.

Now, I've learned about sinusitis/sleep, I'm going to pay more attention. Keep a journal, how I sleep when I sneeze. I was put on Androgel for hot flash. Gonna share all info with Endo, even he tried to figure out what was going on, possibly causing hot sensation/sleep disturbance.

They body system is such a mystery........

They body system is such a mystery........
And a very complicated mystery at that.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors to get things sorted out and hopefully addressed.
I can empathize though because I know when I can't breathe through my nose I am totally miserable and simply can't sleep well at all. I know first hand that when sleep quality or quantity is in the toilet then that's pretty much where I am going to be the next day. Sometimes even when we know the culprit to blame it isn't always so easy to fix it. Been there and done that and have the TShirt as well. I have other health issues that mess with my sleep.
Always something it seems.

Fortunately I rarely have nasal congestion be a problem and usually only pops up when I have some sort of upper respiratory infection which is very rare. I have been battling some morning sneezing when I know is related to the fact that I had to reduce my humidity setting on my cpap due to annoying rain out but I finally broke down and got a hose cozy for the short hose to help prevent the racket the water in the hose causes. I couldn't prevent the rain out even with max heated hose temps. I can't sleep in a warm bedroom either. Again...always something.

I am sorry but I don't have anything in my bag of tricks to offer to maybe help unless you haven't tried playing with the humidity setting which I assume that after all this time you probably have already tried.
Sometimes too much or too little moisture can cause those non allergic rhinitis symptoms.
Mine goes away with humidity setting of 8...but then the cool bedroom temps allows rain out to wake me up.
Always something.
So far the short hose cozy seems to be doing the trick so cross my fingers it will hold this winter as well.

Hi friend, thanks for sharing, and wishes. Sorry to read you experience the same, certainly can relate to what your sharing. I agree, once all is restored, another hurdle comes along. Good news though, you experience acute nasal issue. Sometimes, when it's severe my nose will completely shut.

Thanks, sleep clinic worked with me, adjusting humidity setting. I'll check mine later, share settings.

I purchased a Serta cooling gel pillow, which helps tremendously, I love it.
