Do you have a back up CPAP incase of emergencies?

Post by BG50 » Thu Jun 16, 2022 12:48 pm

I have been on my cpap (ResMed 10) for about 6 months now, and I can honestly say that I am so happy that I finally did this.

I have become so used to the machine that I probably wouldn't be able to sleep without it anymore. It's a new machine so I know it will work for a long time.

But it got me thinking, incase of an emergency I probably wouldn't be able to fall asleep. Does anyone have a back up machine just incase something were to break down unexpectedly or something happened?

Yes, a lot of us do.
  • Spare parts
  • Spare machine
  • Battery backup
Buy a used machine, get the same model, this way you also have spare parts and can do part swapping for trouble shooting.

Yes, I have a spare device and all the accessories. I also keep a box full of filters, hoses, nasal cannulas, oxygen supply tubing. You never know.

I just got my ResMed Airsense 11 and I have my Phillips Dreamstation 1 I could use as a backup. Maybe, eventually, not holding my breath, I'll get a Dreamstation 2 to replace my recalled unit.

this is frowned upon in a cpap forum.

Since my wife and I both have machines, we actually have two back up machines, one for her and one for me. We also keep extra masks, mask cushions, water chambers, hoses, filters, and anything else we can think of.

As mentioned a backup of everything you need to sleep is the wise choice. As is getting the same model not only for ease of replacement supplies but so you already know how to operate it. Get a used cpap.

If you are still in your compliance period you should (will) use that one until compliance is over.

Also worth noting - for those who believe their DME will supply them a loaner if/when they have a problem - keep in mind not only is the broke cpap not considered an emergency, it's not the DME loosing any sleep and it can take two weeks or more for that loaner to show up.

DME's are in business to make money and they don't make money when they have spare cpaps sitting on the shelf.

I hope all this makes sense to someone.

Expect nothing from your doc and DME and you won't be disappointed.

My travel CPAP (Transcend 2) was my back up. Since purchasing a ResMed 10, now I also have a defoamed DS1 as a back up. Hoping to get a DS2 which will become my travel and back up. Also at least 2 sets of everything all the time.

eBay is not allowed to sell CPAP machines being a medical device. Your best bet is Craigslist or FB marketplace. Just a warning, there are lots of scammers out there, best to do a local face to face deal. I also bought a unit from secondwindcpap awhile back and was a good transaction.

I second that.

Unfortunately, the world is full of scammers everywhere. Certainly a face-to-face meeting is the best way AND meet at a coffee shop or a place with camera AND a place to plug in and power-ON what you plan to buy. Give it the sniff test for smoke, pets, and nasty odors. For that you may want to bring your mask? You should ask those questions before meeting tho.

Tho I will say that most often cpaps are sold by people who can seem to adapt to this therapy.

I have a back up. Thank goodness as I am currently using it. I also have extra masks, cushions, hoses, water chambers, filters etc. I have a battery cord and back up batteries for power outages and boon docking.

My main machine will hopefully be returned in a few weeks.
