CPAP with Oxygen

My father has a ResMed S9 Autoset. He is in the hospital with Covid. His blood oxygen levels have been dipping to around 87 at night when he is on CPAP so they have been taking him off of it so he can use oxygen.

The hospital staff does not know how to connect the hospital oxygen system to the CPAP. I looked online and I noticed there is a climateline with an oxygen port. Is this the best way to connect it? I noticed there also seems to be another type of small tube that fits between the mask and climateline tube, which is why I am asking what is best.

Also, does this climateline oxygen port work with all types of oxygen? He may need some kind of oxygen tank once he leaves the hospital, but I don’t know anything about different oxygen systems (I saw something about pulse and continuous and am trying to get up to speed on all of this).

Yes.

I thought pulsed concentrators were inadequate for CPAPs.
Or does that only apply to COPD patients?

I was referring to the actual port connections because that is what I thought the question was about.
The physical connection itself....and that part of the climateline hose for O2 delivery will fit all O2 little hoses.

Now as to the type of O2 delivery device pulse vs continuous....that wasn't the question as I understood it.
I could be wrong....I didn't do so great in mind reading 101 in college.

The physical connection port...those are universal but as to whether or not someone on cpap should use pulse while on cpap....I don't think it is advisable while asleep. So yes, they will connect but there could be very valid reasons for not connecting the O2 device. For sure something that needs to be clarified with the patient's doctor if they were talking about devices that did pulse vs continuous flow.

you need the bleed adapter that connects to the back of your cpap. cpap users need continuous flow oxygen. your doctor will probably start the patient out with two liters of oxygen. once you get hooked on oxygen. you are hooked for life. oxygen is better than using the cpap alone. I just started using oxygen two weeks ago. what a difference it makes. when I was on cpap only. my o2 drops went down to 89. now with oxygen. my o2 levels stay up around 94 for most of the night. when I get up in the morning. I feel like a new man. if you have medicare. they won't pay for a portable concentrator. I bought my own from oxiemedical. this machine is all I use at home and when I go camping. best investment I have ever made. get the o2 ring too. it will monitored your oxygen levels all night. I think all cpap users should get one and use it. that's how I found my problem.

Nope nothing on the machine has to be changed.

When we travel, she gets the oxygen via an Inogen One G3 "portable oxygen concentrator" (also known as POC) which is pulse flow. It doesn't seem to matter -- at least in her case. She feels the same regardless. YMMV of course.

Pulse flow requires it sensing your breathing to deliver the pulse of oxygen, which it will never get when connected to continuous positive pressure, like one has in CPAP.

This is why "feeling" isn't a very reliable way to adequately determine treatment.

The hospital finally sent a respiratory therapist in after 3-4 days of being there and got it resolved. It’s frustrating it took so long.
